While the mainstream cinema has been hobbled by the necessary restrictions put in place by the pandemic, the smaller, independent producers haven’t been so restrained. In fact, I go as far as to say that some independent producers were actually inspired by the situation and managed to take advantage of empty streets and the high quality offered by modern cameraphones.
Being a bit of a hermit, I was quite happy to sit at home and watch a few of the independent films that I was fortunate to be sent, and as a compliment to our roundup of mainstream cinema reviews here are the independent films I got to watch in 2021. I’ve split them into two categories: documentary and fiction.
Regardless of category, you need to bear in mind that most of these films were made for less than the amount spent on catering to your typical blockbuster!

One of the most useful apps I’ve ever come across. I’ve used it for years and recommended it to all my friends. Even if I’m not the type to have to pee during movies often, being able to pull up the app and pass my phone to my mom/friend/grandma so that they know when to go to the bathroom has been invaluable. Because then I don’t have to summarize anything when they get back!!
