Movie Review – Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore

Welcome to this week’s special Newsletter, all about the Wizarding World, starting with our review of FB3. It…wasn’t bad. In fact, it’s pretty good. Just not Harry Potter level good.

More than Snape: Alan Rickman is sorely missed

We also have a cozy corner of Harry Potter actor bios for you to enjoy…let’s start with the beloved Alan Rickman (RIP).

Gary Oldman: Your friendly neighborhood Wizarding Dog

Sirius Black is my boyfriend, and no one can tell me otherwise. (Jilly speaking. Poor Sirius.)

Miriam Margolyes – Hufflepuff’s head of house

The funniest and rudest professor ever! If you’re a Hufflepuff, like Newt Scamander and Deadpool, you’ll find yourself right at home with Miriam.

Maggie Smith – The grand dame of Hogwarts

Don’t believe for one minute that she’s not in charge.

Rhys Ifans –  It’s Luna’s dad!

Suitably scatty when he needs to be.

Timothy Spall – You dirty rat!

So much more than Scabbers.

Toby Jones – Hello Dobby

Second only to Hedwig as a most missed character. Who knew we would cry for an irritating elfling? Toby makes you care, and he’s good at almost any role, even if you don’t know it’s him.

RunPee News

father-stu_square Father Stu

Unorthodox priest has to deal with health concerns. Oh no…that’s The Bells Of Saint Mary’s. This is a real life story of a boxer who turns to the cloth. And the only new movie this week. Spring can be like that.

Grade: B+

Movie Review – Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
Truth be told, while my immediate review/reaction was less than stellar, I liked it a WHOLE lot more on my 2nd and 3rd viewings. I considered changing my review, and even bumped it up a few grades. But I still couldn’t shake the feeling there was a lot inherently wrong with CoG. It reminded me, unfortunately, of my experience viewing Star Wars: The Last Jedi, another very pretty but deeply flawed movie.
Updated Grade: B
Why Fantastic Beasts 2 is not so Fantastic
Initial Impressions of this troubled film.
Newt Scamander is a Fantastic, Yet Underrated Hero

Some protagonists like Thor, James T. Kirk, Hercules, and King Arthur fit both the Strong Action Hero and Orphaned Chosen One categories. It’s a well-worn premise: these heroes fit an archetype most clearly defined by Joseph Campbell’s Journey of the Hero. But what about the Intelligent Beta Male with no ego to stroke…or any actual interest in adventuring? What about a hero who is neurodiverse (my guess is, like me (Jilly), Newt Scamander is on the Spectrum, and there’s nothing wrong with that).
Fantastic Beasts 2 Review from a Harry Potter Novice
JK Rowling consistently projects an air of self importance on the UK Ministry of Magic, who ends up as an obstacle to the heroes and is always lead by a bunch of incompetent sycophants. If she consciously writes that as a reflection of her own government, then I wonder what she must think of the US government…
Spoilers for the entire Harry Potter/Fantastic Beasts series starts here. Use a memory charm to forget what you’re about to read if you’re not up to date with the series.
