I look forward to writing this post every year. I love reviewing the list of movies to see how users rated the movies in the Peeple’s Poll and reflect on the RunPee Review Grades. Without further adieu, let’s get into some numbers!

Dune is by far my favorite science-fiction book ever. I’ve read it countless times now. Not only was Dune: Part II was the #1 rated movie of the year, it also had the highest expectation rating going in. I’m delighted that it more than lived up to expectations. Dune: Part I was no slouch. It had an 85.8 after-movie rating, which placed it as the #8 movie in 2021. I still have some issues with Denis Villeneuve’s rewriting of how Jessica was handled, but I won’t get into that here.
Highest rated movie from each year, starting in 2019 when the Peeple’s Poll was introduced.
Year | Title | Expectation | After-movie | Difference |
---|---|---|---|---|
2024 | Dune: Part Two | 83.9 | 87.8 | +3.9 |
2023 | Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse | 84.9 | 89.4 | +4.5 |
2022 | Top Gun: Maverick | 83.1 | 91.7 | +8.6 |
2021 | Spider-Man: No Way Home | 87.8 | 92.7 | +4.9 |
2020 | 1917 | 79.9 | 86.3 | +6.4 |
2019 | Avengers: Endgame | 84.9 | 89.4 | +4.5 |
Other Notable Hits
Deadpool & Wolverine was the only movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe this year, and it nearly managed to reach the top spot, falling just 0.7 points behind Dune: Part II. It isn’t like the old days—2015-2029—when we could expect multiple MCU hits each year, but I’ll take it. The superhero genre had it’s high-water mark in 2019 with Avengers: Endgame. These days I’m just happy when a superhero movie doesn’t suck.
I’m not a fan of musicals, but I know many people are, and they must be delighted that Wicked wasn’t a disappointment, which had a high expectation of 81.1 and managed to comfortably exceed it with an after-movie rating of 87.7 (+6.3).
I love that The Wild Robot was such a hit. That was a great animated movie, but if you ask me, it wasn’t the best animated movie of the year. That would go to Robot Dreams, on Netflix. (I just looked it up, and Robot Dreams came out in 2023. I just saw it this year. But check it out. It’s great stuff.) In fact, three of the top-9 movies this year were animated: The Wild Robot, Transformers One, and Inside Out 2. That’s a pretty good ratio, considering that animated movies make up only a tiny fraction of wide-release movies. Maybe that’s a hint to some studios out there.
Worst Movies
The trailer made for Megalopolis intrigued me. I expected that it would either be great or a train wreck. It looks like most people agreed with me. Megaloposil had a high expectation rating but is, unfortunately, the lowest-rated movie overall and the second worst when judged by the difference between expectation and after-movie rating, with a -8.6.
What people are saying
about the RunPee app.
Must have app if you love the movies
If you’re like me and enjoy a 92oz soda as part of the movie experience, you’ll be thankful for this app telling you the best times to go for a quick break. Whether that’s to refill your soda or recycle it.
Possibly an even better feature is the info on if the movie has after credits scenes. There’s nothing worse than sitting there reading about who the key grip was, then finding out that’s all you did. I blame Marvel for the stupid trend.
Seriously, I see a dozen movies a month and use this app every single time. Worth every Penny of the infinity coin thing I bought.

Shocking surprise
On what planet would you have expected Joker: Folie a Deux to have a worse rating than Madame Web? But there it is, sitting right below Madam Web with a 56.9.
SONY. WTF?
Sony gave us Madam Web and Kraven the Hunter—in the same year. I think people are being way too generous with their rating of Kraven. Sony needs to get their act together. They’re starting to make the DCU look good.
Beating Expectations
On the exceeding expectations side, Transformers One had a +11.2 jump over expectations. It’s shocking that a Transformers movie was better than expected. I wouldn’t mind if they rebooted the entire franchise with nothing but animated versions. And as a plus, an animated Megan Fox can never age—not that she hasn’t aged well.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare was one of those movies that looks like it’s going to be kind of terrible but fun. And it turned out to be pretty damn good, and a lot of fun. I have high hopes that Henry Cavill will achieve the same result with the Highlander reboot.
Madam Web holds the ignominious honor of having the lowest expectation rating of the year at 56.0. It’s after-movie rating was just barely above that mark at 57.2. That also distinguishes Madam Web as the worst movie that managed to meet expectations.
Failing Expectations
Thirteen movies failed to meet expectations this year, which is about average. We’ve already seen that Joker: Folie a Deux had the second lowest after-movie rating, but it fell short of expectations by -10.3. That’s epic.
Another surprising movie that hasn’t lived up to expectations is Nosferatu. It is a critically acclaimed movie, but apparently, it’s not what people thought it would be. On the plus side, it does have the highest expectation score (77.0) of any movie that failed to meet expectations (75.2).
Best Movie Next Year?
If you could pick one movie to be the best movie in 2025, what would it be? There’s a lot to choose from, but a quick list of blockbusters would be:
In The Grey: Jake Gyllenhaal, Henry Cavill, Eiza Gonzalez, Rosamund Pike, Fisher Stevens
Captain America: Brave New World: Anthony Mackie, Tim Blake Nelson, Harrison Ford, Carl Lumbly, Danny Ramirez, and Shira Haas
Mickey 17: Robert Pattinson, Robert Pattinson, Robert Pattinson, Robert Pattinson,… Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun
Novocaine: Jack Quaid, Amber Midthunder, Ray Nicholson
Disney’s Snow White: Rachel Zegler, Gal Gadot, and Andrew Burnap
Thunderbolts: David Harbour, Hannah John-Karmen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Florence Pugh, Harrison Ford
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning: Tom Cruise, Haley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Ving Rhames, Pom Klementieff, Esai Morales
Ballerina: Ana de Armas, Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, Norman Reedus, Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno
How to Train Your Dragon: Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerad Butler, Ruth Codd
28 Years Later: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell
Jurassic World Rebirth: Scarlett Johanson, Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo
Superman: David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nicholas Hoult
The Fantastic Four: First Steps: Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn
TRON: Ares: Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Cameron Monaghan, Evan Peters, Gillian Anderson, Jodie-Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Hasan Minhaj, Jeff Bridges
Wicked: For Good: Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Keala Settle
Avatar: Fire and Ash: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, David Thewlis, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Yeoh, Oona Chaplin
I’m conflicted. I would love to see James Gunn’s reboot of Superman, hell, the reboot of the entire DCU, get off to a good start. The DCU has been so up and down, and filling some Cavill-sized shoes won’t be easy for David Corenswet. But then there’s also The Fantastic Four, which is on its fourth reboot. The previous three have been laughably bad. This quartet of superheroes needs all the help they can get. And lastly, there’s Avatar: Fire and Ash. The last Avatar movie was so not good.
I’m going with Superman. It would be awesome to reboot this franchise with a fantastic movie right from the start. I could also say Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning, but I don’t think this movie needs any help. It’s going to be awesome. The Mission Impossible franchise is highly underrated.
In the comments below, let me know which movie you think needs the most help.
