Movie Review – The Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad 2
THE SUICIDE SQUAD
(L-r) JOEL KINNAMAN as Colonel Rich Flag, ALICE BRAGA as Sol Soria, DANIELA MELCHIOR as Ratcatcher 2, KING SHARK, IDRIS ELBA as Bloodsport and JOHN CENA as Peacemaker

One of the better movies in the DC Universe (DCU). But we expected that from writer/director James Gunn. The movie has plenty of humor and charm mixed in with over the top, grotesque violence that will leave you going, “Ohhhhhhhhhhhh-no he didn’t.”

Plot (Spoilers)
Supervillains Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, Peacemaker and a collection of nutty cons at Belle Reve prison join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X as they are dropped off at the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.

Probably the single biggest failing of the DCU is their abysmal portrayal of villains. The first Suicide Squad is a great example. The villain was laughably lame. James Gunn played it safe and created stock villains but did it in a creative and fun way.

The antagonistic relationship between Bloodsport and Peacemaker gave plenty of good laughs. The choice to use Sylvester Stallone as the voice for King Shark was obvious but brilliant. Needless to say, Margot Robbie was again perfect as Harley Quinn.

I believe Margot Robbie is a more perfect personification of her superhero character than any other actor. There are a lot of actors who have really nailed their characters over the years. Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and Christian Bale as Batman all come to mind as owning their characters as better than anyone else could hope to achieve. But no one could hope to pull off Harley Quinn like Robbie. Feel free to argue that with me in the comments below.

Grade: B

About The Peetimes: I added an early Peetime at 31 minutes only as an emergency in case you can’t wait until the 2nd Peetime. I think the 2nd Peetime is best. You won’t miss any action.

There are extra scenes during, or after, the end credits of The Suicide Squad. (What we mean by Anything Extra.)

Margot Robbie floored me in Terminal, and I’ve become a big fan, she’s great to watch..
Lately I’ve become enamored of Flula Borg, and I’m hoping he’s fun in this as Javelin and doesn’t go off the rails entirely. Though I’ll be watching Buddy Moon tonight and looking forward to him hamming it up in that with his friend because they wrote it.

  2. I’ll have to put “Terminal” on my watch list. Thanks.

  3. This was great! The first film was mostly terrible and I agree with you about the villain problem. I also think Margot Robbie is wonderful as Harley Quinn and I will watch her in that role forever. The only other person I would argue is equal in their role is Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man. He also took a lesser known character and turned it into a must see experience across multiple films. Robbie does, however, have a tougher job making Harley lovable and still manages to create someone real in a crazy world. Max credit to James Gunn who shows again that he is a genius filmmaker.

  4. RDJ is amazing as Iron Man. I can hardly imagine anyone doing it better. But, I read that way back when there was a possibility of Tom Cruise playing Stark. I’m glad he didn’t but at the same time, I think we might be saying now that no one could have been better at it.

Because of the physicality, I can’t imagine anyone could pull off Thor better that Hemsworth. Everything about him screams “THOR”.

Also, I love Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, but man, I think Emily Blunt would have been amazing in that role as well. And she nearly was.

  5. I agree about Margot, Thor, and RDJ. I also agree Emily Blunt would have been a great Black Widow (although I’m happy with Scarlett J). But the one I really think PWNS his character is Chris Pratt as Star Lord. (Also as Emmett in the Lego movies.) I think Ben Browder could have done Star Lord when he was younger, as Peter Quill is basically John Crichton, but that time has passed. No one else I think can manage to be a complete goofball with mad skillz, such an adorable and frustrating bro-dude. James Gunn did a cool thing when he cast Browder as one of the Sovereign’s people in GOTGv2.

Who else is perfection in the MCU? Tom Holland redeemed Spidey, and Paul Rudd as Ant Man took a character that could have been tiresome and made it gold.

And I’m very thankful we got a great Banner/Hulk, finally, with Mark Ruffalo. He’s got it nailed. The best Banner since that Incredible Hulk show in the 70s.

One last shout out to Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy. He’s almost better at it than DeForrest Kelly, and that’s saying a lot.

  6. Basically the MCU has nailed casted from beginning to end. At least for their heroes. We should also give a shoutout to Hiddleston as Loki and especially Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther.

Is there anyone who isn’t well cast?

  7. Yeah, Loki and T’Challa (RIP), for sure. And after watching the Loki show on Disney+, I’m even more impressed with Tom Hiddleston. He doesn’t get to really ‘act’ in the films, but in his eponymous show there are so many episodes where just his body language — or eyes alone — speak volumes. He’s really amazing when given something to do.

It probably says something about DC that the comment thread here turned into an MCU love fest.

    LOL, true
