Movie Review – F9 (The Fast & the Furious)

f9_header

What can you say? The F&F movies follow a formula about family and trust and then one-upping the action from the previous installment. It’s been a while since I saw the previous F&F movie—Fate of the Furious—but my recollection was that the action in that movie was better than this one. I think they tried to take it to the next level in this one. If you’ve already seen the movie then you know what I’m talking about. But that was a gimmick. There wasn’t much action to it.

Plot (Spoilers)
Cipher enlists the help of Jakob, Dom’s younger brother to take revenge on Dom and his team.

Note: F&F certainly isn’t known for their realism, but a simple Google search would have informed them that low earth orbit is 100 miles (160km). Not 50 miles as they said in the movie. It’s a tiny thing, but it just points to the sloppiness of the writers. And oh yeah, magnets don’t work that way. But whatever.

Speaking for myself, I’m growing tired of these movies. I wasn’t expecting much out of it, but it was worse than expected. And so far the Peeple’s Poll bears that out.

I would love to know what the F&F fans think of this movie. I’d ask my sister, who was a fan, but she said she lost interest a few movies ago. If you are a fan it would be great to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Grade: D+

About The Peetimes: My aim was to avoid using any action scenes in the Peetimes. There’s a lot of action, and plot/character development, so that wasn’t easy to do. But I did find 3 pretty good Peetimes. I’d recommend either the first or last of the last Peetimes. The middle one has a lot of dialog.

This is a great app. I wish more people would support it

This app provides info about movies, reviews, ratings from people who have seen it before and after viewing. It has links to info about the movies. It let’s you know when there will be a lull in the action and how long it will last. If you want to know what happens during that time, you can check the brief synopsis (you have to click a link, so no accidental spoilers). It has a timer you can set (silent) to alert you to a break. It also tells you whether there is anything extra during or after the credits. It’s really a wonderful app. I’ve subscribed for a couple of years to support the developers, but I noticed some of the links to provide feedback didn’t seem to work today. They also made it free, with voluntary donations to see the pee-times. If you haven’t tried it, I encourage you to do so, and subscribe if you like it. I really hope the app is supported so it can continue to be maintained!

Developers note: RunPee doesn’t make much money but it supports itself nicely. Donations are appreciated, but not required. We’ll add as many movies to the database as we can until there are no more movie theaters.

  1. Hoping I can manage to sit through this nearly 2.5 hour movie. It’s a slow time for new movies right now, hence me having nothing else to watch. Yikes.

  2. lol, first world problems. 🙂

Don’t worry, it looks like there are plenty of good movies coming out soon. Don’t give up hope. 🙂

  3. I was seriously expecting a lot more. And I’m not interested in Cipher. Jeez. At least my prediction that F&F would end up in space came true. Now waiting on that Moon buggy chase sequence I see in my head. Actually, there was one in Ad Astra, so I’ll mentally insert that.

  4. I think F&F has solidly in the “jump the shark” phase. Actually, that would be a really funny scene to add to the next movie where they actually jump over a tank of sharks or something like that. 🙂

These are suspension of belief summer movies. They make a fortune and are around to give viewers something to have fun with and not have to analyze. This is a series that has risen from the grave of Tokyo Drift and the horrible expectations for number 4 to some of the largest box office takes ever. As Ebert reviewer Matt Seitz said when thinking about the special effects: “Oh sure, why not?” And that’s what this series is. When Bond does this stuff we don’t even blink. When the MI team makes another giant leap we applaud. Same here. Escapist films are just that. Relax, sit back, eat your popcorn and forget the world for two hours. And if you really want to escape, go see it in DBox.

  6. Hey Patrick. That’s certainly the attitude to take to maximize the enjoyment. I’m forced to use that sometimes for movies that I “want to like”. My problem is that I think the F&F movies could be better than they have been recently. Out of this world action doesn’t have to come at the expense of decent writing.

I hope in the next F&F movie they actually have a scene of them jumping shark. That would be hilarious.
