A24 did it again. My love/hate relationship with them continues, and with Undertone, I’ll admit they at least had me on edge.

Where Undertone genuinely earns its keep is in the atmosphere. The lighting, the ambient dread, the sound design — they all work together to build a sustained sense of unease that got under my skin. This is essentially a horror movie you hear more than you see, and when it works, it really works. Without that emotional anchor, the scares feel like they’re happening to a stranger. And honestly, that’s where the good news ends. From there, Undertone goes downhill fast.
My issue? Evy. I never connected with her. Whether that’s the writing, the performance, or both, something kept me from caring about what happened to her — and when you’re watching a one-woman show for most of the runtime, that’s a problem.

I've loved this app for years and use it at the theater and home. Super easy to use and so helpful to know when it's a good time to run for the restroom. I notify my kids when it's close to time, so I don't end up running them to the restroom multiple times. (Updated review from 4 to 5 . I'd had an issue with the app while at the theater and it was quickly resolved with FANTASTIC customer service. Thanks, RunPee!)

One practical note: this movie is hard to hear. Dialogue gets swallowed up by the atmosphere, and there were moments I felt like I was missing something important. If you can catch it in a Dolby theater, that’s probably your best bet — apparently, A24 released it there specifically for the audio experience. Otherwise, watching at home with a rewind button is genuinely the smarter call.
It had the bones of something genuinely unsettling, but not enough came together to make it worth the trouble.

Plot
The host of a popular paranormal podcast becomes haunted by terrifying recordings mysteriously sent her way.
RunPee.com owes RunPee Sis a huge debt of gratitude. She sees any movie needed with no complaints and has done so for ten years (even basing Thanksgiving and Christmas family festivities around the seeing films). In 2015 Sis ran the entire RunPee enterprise herself, while RunPee Dan, Jilly and Mom went traipsing off to Europe. Sis is the spider in the web holding the RunPee family together — besides being a funny, well rounded person, and a joyous pleasure to be around. Her favorite films start and end with horror (which thank goodness she’s happy to see, since most of us don’t have the stomach for it) — but also likes silly comedies, sad dramas, and musicals of all types. If you’ve used a Peetime for a scary film, you probably have RunPee Sis to thank for it.
Favorite movie genre: Horror, horror, and more horror. The more disturbing, the better. Period.
