Ready or Not: Here I Come

It’s hard to beat the original.

I will admit that I had not seen the original Ready or Not when I was approached to do the Peetimes for this movie. I had some time today to see the original before I went to the theatre to see the sequel. As horror movies are not really my jam – that’s Christine’s forte! – I was a little concerned about seeing two horror movies right in a row.

But I really enjoyed the original! Creative, funny, good shocks, and Samara Weaving as the bride were fantastic. As for the sequel? Well, hm. To sum it up, it’s just not as much fun.

We know the concept of the hunt already, and in this one, they bring in other families that are part of a “council” that now have to hunt her…and her sister. Another big building or two, and another big hunt. (Strong “John Wick 2” vibes with more world-building mythology, which…isn’t needed.) Lots of different characters are doing the hunting – some are funny, and some are just there to fill space. More shocking kills, but just an occasional joke here or there. It’s quite darker than the first, especially in the second half. While the first one was a “black comedy,” this one is more…well, just “black.”

Brilliant idea with great information

I’ve been using RunPee for a few years now and it’s basically a requirement of going to the movies for me. The best part of course are the “pee times” that give you cues, synopses and times for when you can pee without missing the most important parts of the movie. There is also information about the credits- length, extras and if there are any extra scenes at the wayyy end. Super helpful to just know that it is or isn’t worth staying. There is a timer function that will buzz your phone when it’s a good time to pee. I also appreciate that the app is very conscientious about it being an app you use in a theater- dark background, all silent alarms etc. I will always enjoy the experience of the theater even if I could watch things at home- but I’ve even used it at home to check for things like after credit scenes or other information too.

I’m not saying it’s bad, necessarily; it’s just that we saw it done better in the original film. So, bottom line: it’s just not as much fun. Which is a bummer.
