Disclosure Day is Spielberg trying to relive his glory days; sometimes he hits; sometimes he… I don’t want to say misses. It’s more like he fouls it off.
Close Encounters is one of my all-time favorite movies. I’ve watched it so many times that each rewatch is like visiting an old friend who always tells the same stories, but they’re great stories. The pacing, the character interactions and development, the developing mystery are all masterfully crafted together by a young but brilliant writer-director—Stephen Spielberg.

The parallels between Disclosure Day and Close Encounters are too numerous to mention. Suffice to say, there’s a bunch-a-bunch. I’m looking forward to Disclosure Day streaming so that I can rewatch Close Encounters and then the next night rewatch Disclosure Day as a sort of bookends to Spielberg’s career. (I know he has more movies remaining, but fewer in front than behind.)
But enough of the comparisons. How does Disclosure Day land on its own?

Acting
Emily Blunt is one of the leads, so the floor is pretty high already. Josh O’Connor and Colin Firth are the two other leads and each is great. O’Connor, in particular, is a great. I’ve seen him in other movies, such as Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Story. The vibe of both characters are much the same, so the casting director deserves a lot of credit for getting the right actor for this role.
Message
This might be the single aspect where *Disclosure Day* outshines *Close Encounters*. I feel that the message *Close Encounters* tries to deliver is unspoken and it’s subtle. There are many things that you can take away from it. *Disclosure Day* does a better job of communicating intent and conflict. Both movies leave you with a sense of wonder, but differently.
Conclusion
I have a feeling it will take three to five years, and rewatching *Disclosure Day* about once a year before I can really judge this movie. I think the best thing I can say about the movie right now is that I want to watch it again, which doesn’t happen often with movies these days.

Plot
A cybersecurity expert becomes a whistleblower to reveal secrets about aliens, putting him on the run from a corporation while a meteorologist experiences strange phenomena and joins forces with him to prove there’s life beyond our knowledge.
