Movie Review – Asteroid City

I have no doubt, that as soon as we can ask an AI to create a feature movie we won’t have to specify that it be like a Wes Anderson movie. That will be the default.

If you’re not already aware, when you prompt an AI to create something it will sometimes go off the rails and add false, or non-sensical, things. In the AI field it’s called hallucinations. It’s what you get when you ask an AI to create an image of a horse running through the woods and it gets everything just right, except the horse has three legs and a bicycle wheel.

I like the other Anderson better

I appreciate that Wes Anderson creates distinctive movies. While his movies are all very much alike, they are unlike anything else. He was A24 before A24. I, however, am not in love with his distinctive style. The more random something is the more I want the writer(s) to tie all of that randomness together in some fashion at the end. Perhaps there’s no better example of this than the movie Magnolia written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. (No relation to Wes.)

Wes’ plots seem to be random for the sake of randomness. And to my recollection, his characters don’t evolve through the story. Just thinking back over a few of his movies I don’t recall an occasion where a character grows. I don’t need every character to have an arc that leads to some inner growth, but I’d like to have at least one or two that do so. In Wes’ movies the circumstances around a character may change, but not the character themselves.

Grade: C

About The Peetimes: If you’re familiar with Wes Anderson movies, then you can appreciate how hard it is to do Peetimes for one. Everything in his movies seems random and unimportant, and therefore nothing is random and everything is important. I chose Peetimes that are mostly outside of the movie. There are many scenes that break the forth-wall. You’ll understand as soon as the movie begins. So at least you can follow what’s going on inside the movie no matter which Peetime you use.

Couldn’t live without this app anymore. Perfect to time my run for another glass of wine or two. Works great with my smart watch.

I’ll be going to see this next week and I can’t wait!

I’m a big Wes Anderson fan and I might have to submit a review from an enthusiast. I seem to remember something similar happened with The French Dispatch…

  2. Dan, I believe we must’ve been watching Asteroid City at the same time. As I left the theatre, your grade was up but the review was still pending. 🙂
Can’t wait for your take, Rob!

I am a Wes Anderson fan. Lawd knows why because I don’t like all his movies, but I guess I just appreciate that his movies are truly HIS. Love, like, or dislike his movies, there is zero mistaking whose film you’re watching once the reel starts to roll.

Asteroid City: Is one I enjoyed. It started at the onset with the credits at the beginning. I loved that! Of course, Scarlett Johansson is OMG-stunning and the film visuals are so bright and colorful! Even if I’m not 100% sure what’s going on, at least it’s fun to look at. Haha

My cons: I missed Bill Murray being in it (he had Covid at the time of filming). Steve Carrell was fine, but Wes with no Bill seems a bit of a slight. Jason Schwartzman was fine, too, but I kept looking at him thinking I would’ve preferred Luke Wilson. Just me. And most of all…I wish the grandfather was was played by any “elderly” actor in Hollywood over Tom Hanks. (Yes, we get it – he’s a big star, a great actor, blah blah blah…but must he be given every role in every movie that needs a 60+ year old white man?)

I gave this Wes movie a solid B.
