Insidious: Out of the Further

Going in, I missed Patrick Wilson. His absence — and the story of Josh Lambert, the character he’s carried since the beginning — took some adjusting to. This installment hands the reins to a new lead, Gemma, played by Amelia Eve, and once I let go of expecting Josh to show up, I was able to actually sink into her story instead.

Maya (Gemma’s daughter) is the standout here, played with real presence. The cringe factor belongs to Gemma — she’s a dental hygienist, and the movie leans hard into that job, with multiple scenes of her working on patients’ teeth that had my skin crawling in a very specific, mundane-horror way. It’s a smart choice; there’s something about dental discomfort that hits differently than a generic scare.

Elise Rainier is back, and Lin Shaye remains the one actor who’s been in every single Insidious film. She’s great here, and gets a catchphrase that actually made me laugh — a nice beat of levity in a movie that otherwise wants your skin crawling.

The premise itself is well thought out, and the visual language they use to distinguish our world from The Further is genuinely unique. It’s not just a filter swap — it feels like a real dimensional shift.

Single best investment

By and far best investment Ive made. I used to drive my husband nuts because Id be a fidgeting mess the last half hour of the movie trying not to miss important parts. Now I just turn this app on and *bam* I can actually focus on the movie the whole time. Even puts alerts to my watch so even better. Also I can guarentee all the 5 star star star star star reviews arent fake as one person accused - its just that so many of us movie-goers had the same problem and this fixed it. Yes, it is paid but jeeze its expensive to keep watching movies and updating an app for every movie. And if you read more about the creator he mentions he has several people contributing - so yeah its paid but omg worth every cent. 10/10

Where it falls short is in comparison. Stacked against the earlier films in the franchise, this one doesn’t quite measure up. Taken on its own, though, it’s a fairly good time.
