Movie Review – Escape Room: Tournament of Champions

escape-room-2_header

If you enjoyed the first Escape Room—I did—then I’m sure you’ll enjoy this sequel because it’s really a continuation of the first movie. Both movies are so short the two of them together add up to one properly long movie.

Plot (Spoilers)
Six people unwittingly find themselves locked in another series of escape rooms, slowly uncovering what they have in common to survive. Joining forces with two of the original survivors, they soon discover they’ve all played the game before.

I wish I had rewatched the first Escape Room prior to seeing the follow-up. But, the first 2 1/2 minutes of this movie recap what happened. But given that the end credits of Tournament of Champions are 7 minutes long that leaves this movie with less than 80 minutes of original content. To me, that feels a little too short.

On one hand, this movie doesn’t dawdle and drag scenes out unnecessarily, which many movies mistakenly do. On the other hand, there seems to be a lack of meat on the bone so to speak. I think the answer lies somewhere in giving the characters a little more time to interact between challenges. I think the creators feel like they don’t want to keep to a frantic pace, but adding breathing scenes helps the characters bond, which gives the audience a chance to bond with the characters and raises the stakes.

Grade: C+

A Quiet Place – Movie Analysis with SPOILERS

About The Peetimes: I have two good Peetimes. I would recommend the 2nd one because it doesn’t involve any clue solving.

There are no extra scenes during, or after, the end credits of Escape Room: Tournament of Champions. (What we mean by Anything Extra.)

One of the most useful apps I’ve ever come across. I’ve used it for years and recommended it to all my friends. Even if I’m not the type to have to pee during movies often, being able to pull up the app and pass my phone to my mom/friend/grandma so that they know when to go to the bathroom has been invaluable. Because then I don’t have to summarize anything when they get back!!

I agree with you, I had never seen the first one, so I watched the night before I went to see this 2nd one. I do like a movie that gets right into it, and I liked how they took little few minute “breathers” so we could know more about each other, would I have liked it to be longer, yes I think they could have gotten in another room and still made it interesting. I did like the ending of the first movie and this one too as it does seem to plan for a 3rd one (No spoilers will be given) but as with a Halloween movie even when things seem doomed you can find a way to keep it going, and again I was really surprised about both of them, another thing I liked about both is they seem to almost fall into the Final Destination or Saw movies way they act, but what is good about this one is really is there is no blood or gore, it is implied which i think makes a movie more scary then showing it as the human mind can think of more scary things then showing gore. I give it a B

  2. Well stated. I agree with each of your points. Especially that implied gore in better than blood and guts.

My main reason for downgrading it comes from the runtime. For the cost of a theater ticket I believe the creators should be obligated to provide a minimum length of entertainment. I’m not exactly sure what that minimum is, but it’s greater than 82 minutes.

  3. Do you guys remember I gave the first Escape Room an A+? For the genre it tackled, I found it unexpectedly delightful. I loved solving the rooms along with the characters.

I’m glad to hear the follow-up is worthwhile. Making the two into one film is probably the way to go, short as they are. I hope I get to see this one soon (Prob on streaming).
