Movie Review – Deep Water

Deep Water

Deep Water is somewhat a throwback to the survival stories of the ’70s: The Towering Inferno, The Poseidon Adventure, Airport. You’re introduced to several characters, you get to know their situation in life, and then boom! You see how they react when put in a bad situation.

In this case, they experience one heck of a bad situation: they survive a plane crash in the middle of the ocean, only to discover that sharks are all over the place…and they’re hungry.

I understand the purpose of giving the characters a backstory; the filmmakers want you to sympathize with them. But in this movie, there are SO many characters, and you’re given about 2-3 minutes each to size them up. Frankly, I just didn’t care. Let’s be very honest: I’m there for the crash and the sharks. Can we just get to that?

That being said, there is one particular person in this movie where his being in it made me a bit sad: Ben Kingsley. Ben “Oscar winner for playing Gandhi” Kingsley. I know that was 43 years ago, but sheesh. C’mon, Ben’s agent. Get him in something better than this. (But I will admit, he acted the heck out of his part.)

Got this back when I was pregnant, but I'll be keeping it forever, it's just so handy. I don't go to the movie theater that often (even back before quarantine when you actually could...) but I make sure the app and the movie list are all current and updated, cause it's so handy! It's great for running late cause you can read their summary, obviously awesome for bathroom or snack breaks mid movie, and I also love that it tells you if there's anything after the credits which is very handy.

The plane crash is harrowing. It’s not just people screaming, and a fake-looking plane landing in the water. I do have to say that it seems like the producers might have actually done their homework. It was impressive.

And the sharks? Not your typical Jaws-type shark. These are Mako sharks, not Great Whites. Makos are sleeker and move differently – faster, jerkier – and that added some uniqueness to the shark action.

Let’s cut to the chase: this ain’t quality cinema. But if you’re looking for a kinda cheesy, fun action flick with a plane crash and hungry sharks, you can do a lot worse. I’ll give it a “recommend”…but just barely.
