Movie Review – Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin.

Let me tell you, this was a hard movie to watch so soon after the results of the last election here in the US (2024). The echos of Germany 1933 are still audible and seemingly growing louder.

About the movie

The acting was good, not great. I think it’s mostly due to the script being torn between simultaneously telling a story about a man and a cause and a historical time, all at the same time. They didn’t do a bad job, but neither did they do a great job.

The editing was the one thing that stood out to me that could have been better. It felt choppy, and jumped around too much. There are some scenes that could have been cut, and also a few transition scenes could have helped the flow.

Early in the movie there are some good scenes that begin Dietrich’s character development. There’s a nice scene with his twin sister, and the scenes in the jazz club were okay. But what was missing were a few scenes like this scattered throughout the movie. Once the shit gets real every scene has serious overtones. A few extra scenes to break up the seriousness could have provided more ups and downs, making it a more poignant movie. Instead, the last hour or more of the movie is a constant slog against the inevitable.

Another angle the writers might have taken is to tell more of the story about the soldier who gave the bible back to Dietrich. There’s some real meat in that. Maybe telling a story about how he was misled into the inequities of the Nazi party and how he came to realize his error but was already trapped. There’s great stuff in that, but his character is never developed.

Grade: B

About The Peetimes: I’m sorry, but I missed the start of the movie. It seems that there were no trailers before this one started.

I have three good Peetimes, any one of them will do well, but I think the first two are the best.

There are extra scenes during, or after, the end credits of Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin..

Best app ever!

RunPee is the only app we use before movies and afterward. not only does RunPee tell you when it’s a good time to leave the theater, kids these days ask if there’s anything during/after the credits, and RunPee lets parents know when there might be some thing that a kid might miss!

RunPee has tidbits, ratings, leave the theater times, and lengths. This is THE VITAL APP for watching any movie!

We used it when my wife was pregnant, and we have recommended it to every pregnant gal we know! How else can you enjoy a movie when you have to go out so often?!

  1. come on dan. keep politics out of your app. Okay…Trump did kill and torture thousands of jews during his first term. They’ve all been buried and forgotten and let’s hope Trump doesn’t move on to killing Americans this time.
I enjoy your app but please don’t make me lose respect for you.

    1. I don’t let my personal views on religion or politics color the movies I pick to add or the Peetimes that we chose. But when I have to write a review about a political movie it’s going to be inevitable.

  2. The flash Back/Forwards confused me in the movie.

Sad, because I was lookimg forward to the movie and left disappointded.

    1. I’m lucky, I knew absolutely nothing about the movie before seeing it, so I wasn’t disapointed.

  3. First of all, I love this app and the work that you do. As a fan I say it as helpful advice from a reader:

It does ruin the review when you start with a comment about partisan politics. The reader automatically is distracted and it colors reading the review. Just don’t.

    1. Thanks for the feedback. I can see your point, but I also have thoughts to convey. I’ll keep this in mind for the future, but I can’t promise that I won’t express my opinions on a subject. You should have read the stuff that I deleted from my review. 🙂

  4. I disagree with the other folks. We have a new president whom has said, in front of cameras and thousands of Americans, that he plans on being a dictator and going after his political enemies with the military. That’s just plain fact, no political party can deny that. It strongly echoes words of past autocrats – that is also true. It’s NOT political speech to correlate current facts & historical facts. This app is Dan’s labor of love. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt – or at least some critical thinking.

    1. Thanks James. We can be friends. Also, notice how the criticism comes from “anonymous”? No respect. If someone is going to be critical then own it. Right?
