Movie Review – Smile

smile_header

After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can’t explain. Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.

I definitely enjoyed the new concepts presented in Smile. They gave us enough to understand how it works to a point but not telling us too much. That way we can fill in the blanks ourselves. Points for that. Being a horror movie I am not surprised to get a few jumpscares. I understand that it is an easy way to get the audience to have a quick adrenaline rush. But you also don’t have to get that vested in the movie. If you’re just going from one adrenaline rush to the next. The style of scary movies I like best engages my brain, not just being shocked or surprised once and a while. If you are different from me and enjoy the jumpscares. You will love this movie. Because they do it a lot. A LOT! That made it lose points for me. The finale almost felt a little anti-climactic because you weren’t invested as much. Because you weren’t in your head as much as you maybe should have been. Also for some, it might have felt a little too long, being just shy of 2 hours.

I really did enjoy the concept and definitely left the theater thinking they can definitely make more smile movies. I just hope they stay away from telling us too much about who, what, or how it all works. Right now there are blank spots we as the audience will fill in. It will never live up to what we come up with. I hope they figure out how to tell more Smile stories while not over-explaining themselves into a corner.

Got this back when I was pregnant, but I’ll be keeping it forever, it’s just so handy. I don’t go to the movie theater that often (even back before quarantine when you actually could…) but I make sure the app and the movie list are all current and updated, cause it’s so handy! It’s great for running late cause you can read their summary, obviously awesome for bathroom or snack breaks mid movie, and I also love that it tells you if there’s anything after the credits which is very handy.
