Movie Review – Mortal Kombat II

Mortal Kombat II

I’ve been looking forward to Mortal Kombat II for a while now. I played MK back in the 90s—Kitana was my go-to character—so I’m definitely the target demographic. Was I disappointed? Not at all. Was I impressed? Not at all. It was pretty much exactly what I expected.

The plot doesn’t take itself seriously. There are some questionable character motivations where the script basically says, “Shut up and go with it.” The script also doesn’t try to go too deep into the woods on the Amulet/MacGuffin. It gives the characters something to do other than wait for the next kombat. Kudos to the writers for not trying to get cute and overcomplicating it.

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t overly impressed with the fight scenes. They were okay, but nothing special. If there were room for improvement, it would be to add some acting/drama to the action sequences. It’s hard to do well, but every now and then, I see a movie with an action scene that doubles as plot development or, especially, character development. The example that leaps to mind is many of the Mission Impossible movies. During some of the action scenes, the characters are also learning/discovering, and that changes the direction of the action. There was a sliver of that in MK3, but just a sliver.

Conclusion

I’m glad I saw it. I’m looking forward to the next one. I’ll never watch this movie again.
