Independent Film Review – Futra Days

Please help promote the RunPee app by sharing our content.

I’m a bit of geek…or nerd. I never know which is which. I was brought up in the house of a science fiction fan (my father) and have memories of time travel based going back to before Doctor Who! And I still like to watch the 1960 version of The Time Machine. As a result any film that plays with the wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff will always get a viewing by me. As a result I was happy when Futra Days was sent over.

The premise of Futra Days is like a mish-mash of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, A Star Is Born, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Instead of messing around with memories, Futra Days is based around an experimental time travel technique. The lead characters reestablished record producer Sean Graves (Brandon Sklenar) and aspiring talent Nicole Chase (Tania Raymonde). The time travel sequence reminded me of the bridging scene between Jupiter and the bedroom in 2001.

Sean Arrives

Sean has just come through a bad break up when he bumps into the intriguing Nicole. Rather than just letting things progress and seeing what happens, he decides to try out a revolutionary time travel technique to pop into his own future and see if his heart gets broken or not. The technique has been developed by Dr Felicia Walter (Rosanna Arquette, who is still as gorgeous as I remember her from The Big Blue nearly forty years ago) and lab tech Sheila (Emily McEnroe in her feature debut).

As with all the best MacGuffins, there is no unnecessary exposition as to how the time travel thing works. There’s a complicated looking device being operated by Dr Walter and Sheila, sadly neither of whom wears a white coat. Sean puts on some fancy wraparound sunglasses, sits in an adapted dentist’s chair with flashing lights, spinning things, and liquid filled flasks all on display in the background. If you didn’t know you were in a high tech, sciencey situation before, you do now!

Future Sean Returns

So the science is a bit hit and miss but, ultimately, that doesn’t really matter. You just need to suspend your disbelief and assume that if they say that doing this followed by that results in time travel then that’s all that is needed. What is much more important in any film is the cast and whether they seem like the real thing or not. If you can believe that the lead characters are friends/lovers/family/rivals/enemies then you can go along for the ride.

What Futra Days relies on is whether you think that Sean and Nicole could, realistically, be lovers. And they do. Whatever stage in their relationship they’re at, they are totally believable. I haven’t knowingly seen Brandon Sklenar before but Tania Raymonde seemed very familiar. Then it came back to me…over twenty years ago in Malcolm In The Middle! Futra Days gets a digital release on 21st July 2025 courtesy of Reel 2 Reel Films.
