Movie Review – Dumb Money

I think the obvious comparison is to liken this movie to others such as The Big ShortMargin Call, et al. If you’re familiar with those movies then I’d say that this one isn’t nearly as dark. The events around Game Stop in 2020/21 are tragic to a few, rewarding for more than a few, and game-changing for an industry. But it’s nothing like a global financial crisis, and this movie doesn’t try to make it seem so.

A lot of credit has to be given to the scriptwriters, Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, and the director Craig Gillespie for putting together a really tight script that keeps the tension building from beginning to end. Craig Gillespie was a really good choice to direct because you can see from his filmography—I, Tonya, Million Dollar Arm, and The Finest Hours—that he seems to have a penchant for true stories.

There are also a lot of stories that weave toget her in this movie. There’s the main thread of the hedge fund guys that is contrasted with Keith Gill a.k.a. Roaring Kitty and his family. In addition, there are the stories of the everyday people who are along for the ride. The movie weaves these individual stories together even though none of them ever directly interact.

The acting by everyone involved was great. It felt like watching history unfold instead of reenactment. Kudos to the actors and director for consistently excellent performances.

By the way, can someone tell me, what genre this movie fits in? Like, there should be a genre that is specifically for recent events that are reenacted. Is there one and I’m just missing it?

This is a great app. I wish more people would support it

This app provides info about movies, reviews, ratings from people who have seen it before and after viewing. It has links to info about the movies. It let’s you know when there will be a lull in the action and how long it will last. If you want to know what happens during that time, you can check the brief synopsis (you have to click a link, so no accidental spoilers). It has a timer you can set (silent) to alert you to a break. It also tells you whether there is anything extra during or after the credits. It’s really a wonderful app. I’ve subscribed for a couple of years to support the developers, but I noticed some of the links to provide feedback didn’t seem to work today. They also made it free, with voluntary donations to see the pee-times. If you haven’t tried it, I encourage you to do so, and subscribe if you like it. I really hope the app is supported so it can continue to be maintained!

Developers note: RunPee doesn’t make much money but it supports itself nicely. Donations are appreciated, but not required. We’ll add as many movies to the database as we can until there are no more movie theaters.

Grade: A-

About The Peetimes: There is a LOT of exposition spread out during this movie that is important, but not crucial. I tried to skip any of those scenes in the Peetimes. I think the second Peetime is the best. Important things happen, but it’s easy to summarize.

There are no extra scenes during, or after, the end credits of Dumb Money.

  1. Biographical camedy/drama genre I would say.

    1. True, that pretty much sums up the genres. I guess we could create a new, very specific, genre. But then there would only be a handful of movies in it so what’s the point. 🙂
