I was lucky enough to catch an advance “one night only” screening of One Night Only. I went in knowing it was a romcom, but honestly, it wasn’t what I expected. Kudos to the writers for coming up with a unique storyline – we are taken to an alternate version of America where premarital sex is illegal—except for one night each year. And that night is tonight.
The film follows Owen and Allie, two strangers who aren’t exactly looking forward to a night where everyone around them is focused on quick hookups and checking off a once-a-year obligation. While everyone else is searching for the perfect one-night stand (or three), Owen and Allie come to realize they are looking for something different. They’re looking for something real.

That’s what makes the movie work. Beneath the unusual premise is a story about loneliness, frustration, and the struggle of finding the right person—but also the hope of finding someone who truly sees you. The movie has fun with the outrageousness of its concept, but it never loses sight of Owen and Allie. It’s about what happens when two people finally slow down in a world that’s moving way too fast.
One of the fun surprises is the number of cameos. Some are blink-and-you’ll-miss-them appearances, while others take a little longer to register. About halfway through the movie, I found myself thinking more than once – “Wait… wasn’t that…?” I checked the cast list when the credits rolled, and sure enough, it was. Those unexpected appearances add another layer of fun for the audience.

I've loved this app for years and use it at the theater and home. Super easy to use and so helpful to know when it's a good time to run for the restroom. I notify my kids when it's close to time, so I don't end up running them to the restroom multiple times. (Updated review from 4 to 5 . I'd had an issue with the app while at the theater and it was quickly resolved with FANTASTIC customer service. Thanks, RunPee!)

One Night Only is rated R for frank sexual language and some brief nudity, so this definitely isn’t your typical Hallmark-style romcom. It’s a much edgier take on the genre, and the premise pushes the boundaries in a very different direction.
That being said, I think this movie will connect with a lot of people. If you’re single, you’ll probably get a kick out of the situations, the humor, and the chaos of the night. If you’re “coupled,” you may find yourself appreciating the movie’s message about taking the time to (re)connect and appreciate the person sitting beside you.
At its core, One Night Only isn’t really about one night. It’s about what people are searching for when all the distractions disappear—the chance to find someone who makes that one night, and every night after it, feel like it truly mattered.
Grade: B
