Y’know, sometimes a person just needs a basic Jason Statham movie.
Shelter is just that: an action movie that has him punching and brooding. It doesn’t really go out of its way to do too much more—at least, not successfully.

Statham plays a former assassin who lives by himself on an island. After a freak storm, Statham ends up taking care of a young girl as he tries to nurse her back to health. But when he goes to the town to get supplies, he’s spotted on camera by a group of people out to eliminate him…
But blah blah blah. Who cares, basically. The story is just a reason for him to shoot and punch people and get in an occasional car chase.

Got this back when I was pregnant, but I'll be keeping it forever, it's just so handy. I don't go to the movie theater that often (even back before quarantine when you actually could...) but I make sure the app and the movie list are all current and updated, cause it's so handy! It's great for running late cause you can read their summary, obviously awesome for bathroom or snack breaks mid movie, and I also love that it tells you if there's anything after the credits which is very handy.

They tried to do some character shaping with the teenage girl who accompanies him, and she’s pretty darn good. Bill Nighy attempts to chew up some high-brow scenery as his former handler, who is trying to put him down. But ultimately, it just doesn’t matter.
Too many slow scenes (notice the number of peetimes in this short movie?) and not enough quality action (“quality” being the active word) to justify them are just not a good combination for a Statham movie. It might just scratch that action itch for some people, but for me? Eh, whatever.
