Movie Review – Twisters

Twisters_hero

First up, I’m a huge fan of the original Twister movie. I’ve seen it at least a dozen times. The disaster-movie genre is my guilty pleasure. This genre usually features a dud of a plot and lackluster acting, but the action is suitably apocalyptic. Exactly what I love. 🙂

It is super hard to rate this movie. Do I compare it to movies in general, or only disaster movies, or to the original Twister movie? I guess I’ll try all three.

As a general movie, it probably falls in the C-range. It’s average. The writing is good, but not great.

As a disaster movie, it’s maybe a little better than average. Again, nothing outstanding, but it gets the job done. Tornadoes certainly get plenty of screen time.

In comparison to the original Twister. This is where it gets complicated. It’s hard to consider Twisters as a proper sequel to Twister. There is a clear hint in the beginning that they live in the same reality but there are no character or plot carryovers. Twisters has no where near the same magic that the first one had. I don’t think it would even be fair to expect that. What I did like is the parallel between the bad guy Jonas in the original and Tyler in the sequel. The writers did a good job of making it look like there would be a parallel between those two characters, but then they subverted that plot and flipped it upside down so that who we originally thought was the good guy wasn’t so good after all, but then maybe he was… It’s a little complicated. You know, like actual people are complicated.

Overall, the thing I like the most about the movie is how the characters and relationships between the three main characters evolved. The characters Kate and Javi both evolved during the story. Tyler didn’t change much, but our perception of him did.

I’m having a hard time deciding if I like the actor/character Daisy Edgar-Jones/Kate Carter. I think the actress did a good job with the role she was handed. I’m not thrilled with the way the role was written, but I don’t hate it. This one is going to take some time, and a few rewatches, before I’m really sure how I feel about it. For now I can just say that I’m not disappointed, but I really didn’t expect much in the first place.

Grade: B

About The Peetimes: This was a hard movie to find Peetimes for. There are a lot of characters introduced early in the movie, and then there is a lot of tornado action in the middle. I managed to find two good Peetimes around the mid-point of the movie. Both are good, but I’d recommend the last Peetime over the others.

Single best investment

By and far best investment Ive made. I used to drive my husband nuts because Id be a fidgeting mess the last half hour of the movie trying not to miss important parts. Now I just turn this app on and *bam* I can actually focus on the movie the whole time. Even puts alerts to my watch so even better. Also I can guarentee all the 5 star star star star star reviews arent fake as one person accused – its just that so many of us movie-goers had the same problem and this fixed it. Yes, it is paid but jeeze its expensive to keep watching movies and updating an app for every movie. And if you read more about the creator he mentions he has several people contributing – so yeah its paid but omg worth every cent. 10/10

Just before the scene where they hide in a swimming pool, the 2 leads are in the motel lobby. There is a skinny guy complaining to the hotel clerk, basically being an oblivious jerk. That guy is played by James Paxton, who is Bill Paxton’s son. Nice Easter egg.

    1. I heard that Paxton’s son was in the movie, but I didn’t know where. Thanks for sharing this. I’ll look closely for this the next time I see it. Oh yeah. I’ll watch this again. 🙂

I held it in sitting watching Twisters. I didn’t want to miss a thing. I really enjoy disaster movies and they are best with the chemistry between characters. Downloaded Runpee around the time Tyler almost got smashed.
