The app that tells you the best time to run and pee during a movie without missing the best scenes.

Full Transparency-RunPee app income and expenses

Income Line Chart
Note: Apple doesn’t pay consistently every month. There are some months that they don’t issue a payment, and other months that they make two payments. That’s why the income from Apple varies so widely.

Above is a chart going back to January 2023 of the RunPee income and expenses, broken down by Google, Apple, and direct donations via PayPal/Venmo.

The RunPee app is ad-free and completely free to use. It is supported by donations from our users. We currently have 932 subscribers. That number has decreased over time. Originally, the subscription gave users an ad-free experience, so there was more motivation to subscribe than pure generosity to help support RunPee. When we went to the donation model we had around 1,500 subscribers. We’ve lost around 580 subscribers since then. But, users also give one-time donations, so that balances out the loss a little.

Donations

PayPal: [email protected]

Venmo: @RunPeeApp (phone last four = 6802)

In-app donations are also welcome, but be aware that both Google and Apple take 15% of all donations. PayPal takes less than 3% and Venmo 0%.

Android Users

Over the past three months Android users account for 58% of movies viewed in the RunPee app vs 42% for iPhone users. However, over that same time period Apple users account for about 74% of RunPee income. If Android users would donate at the same clip as Apple users I’d be in great shape. So… Thank you iPhone users! 🙂

Expenses

I spend around $100/month for hosting.

I see at least one movie each week, and sometimes two when the situation arrizes. There are no expenses there besides my time and the cost of an AMC A-List membership. My sister is my Primary Peep. I pay her, and all the other Peeps, $50/movie to send me the Peetimes and write a short movie review. This is my biggest expense by far and depending on the month can cost me somewhere between $200 on the low end and just shy of $600 on the high end.

A Week at RunPee

Obviously, I do a lot of work each week for RunPee. My work consists of watching movies and adding Peetimes, user support (I respond to every email.), writing movie reviews and other blog content, helping with the weekly newsletter and organizing who’s seeing what movies and when, plus adding those movies to the database. I don’t keep detailed numbers on the hours I work on RunPee, maybe I should do that for a month to really know, but my best estimate is about 20/hrs a week.

Oh, that doesn’t include the time I spend actually building and maintaining the RunPee app. In case you didn’t know, Vera (Wife) and I are both software developers. We rebuilt the RunPee app from scratch in 2020-21. That was thousands of hours of work. I worked about 30/hrs a week for a year to rebuild the app and all the backend and the RunPee admin app. Vera also worked a great deal on the app. She did all the work on the Peeple’s Poll and payment systems, plus most of the UI/design work. (That explains why the rebuilt app looks so much better than the old one.)

My goal is to update the RunPee app about 3-4 times a year. Each update will add a new feature, or at least enhance an existing feature, and contain bug fixes. Fortunately, there’s not much left to fix. I’m very proud that at present there are zero known bugs to fix. That isn’t to say there are no bugs; only zero known bugs.

Making ends meet

We are incredibly fortunate that we own our house and car outright. There’s no way we’d make it with a mortgage or car payment. The RunPee income is just about enough to pay for the essentials: food, electricity bill, and phone service. (It sure would be nice to have health insurance, but that’s an expense beyond our means right now.) The rest has to come from elsewhere. Right now we are both co-founders in a startup called Mapt.co: helping high school students navigate the college application process. Currently, the app doesn’t generate enough money to pay the three founders are the two part-time employees. We’re all working on the promise of future income and equity. Hopefully we’ll get a little investment funding soon to help make ends meet and grow our paid user base enough by the end of the year to pay ourselves. That’s the hope, but there’s a lot of work to do to get there. If you, or someone you know, is a high school student then please send them along to Mapt.co. (Not .com!)

Future

There’s nothing for you to worry about. We’ll continue to add Peetimes as much as we can. I’d love to increase the number of movies we offer, but right now it doesn’t make much financial sense. If RunPee brings in more income, or if the Mapt.co app works out and money isn’t so tight then I’ll pay the Peeps to add a few more limited-release movies.

I have two major features that I would like to include in the RunPee app by the end of the year. First, let users see a list of upcoming movies and vote if they are interested in seeing it. This would give me some indication which movies I should focus on for Peetimes. Sometimes we add movies that get only a few hundred views and sometimes we miss limited-release movies that could have gotten more.

The other feature is to use ChatGPT to translate the Peetimes into other languages. I’m not sure how well this will work out, but it won’t cost me anything but time, so I’ll give it a shot. It sure would be nice to spread to Spanish, French, German, Portugese, Hindi, and Chinese. (For starters.)

  • If you think of something we can do to make the app better for you then email me ([email protected]), leave a comment below, or you can chat with us on Discord.

Don’t miss your favorite movie moments because you have to pee or need a snack. Use the RunPee app (Androidor iPhone) when you go to the movies. We have Peetimes for all wide release films every week, including Wicked, Gladiator II, Red One, The Wild Robot and coming soon  Moana 2, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, Kraven the Hunter, Mufasa: The Lion King and many others. We have literally thousands of Peetimes—from classic movies through today’s blockbusters. You can also keep up with movie news and reviews on our blog, or by following us on Twitter @RunPee. If there’s a new film out there, we’ve got your bladder covered.

Just curious, do you live close to a Regal theater? As I have the regal unlimited ($21 a month, cheaper if you pay a year up front) and they let you purchase movies in advanced, from home, outside of the theater so you do not have to wait in line and also you get 10% off snacks, and other things (Like points which you can reward for other people to see a movie and other things) Just trying to be helpful is I am. Thanks for all the great work.

  2. Hey Michael. We do have a Regal in Asheville, but it’s not nearby. The AMC theater is the nearest to us and I have a AMC A-List pass for basically the same deal as Regal Unlimited. The main reason for having A-List is getting tickets in advance. I also have an A-List account for my sister who sees a lot of movies for RunPee.

Thanks again for all your helpful input and helping promote RunPee. RollTide! 🙂

You need to test targeting older movie goers. Really, they’re the ones who need this. Test it on an Instagram site, see if you get a response.

Thank you for the transparency. Will subscribe!

  5. Thanks Jason! Let me know anytime you have a question. You can comment here or email me at [email protected].

  6. Possibly the settings on my phone, but your replies on this page are black print on charcoal background. In other words, nearly impossible to read. Anyone else with same issue?

  7. Hi Robin. I think you’re right, it’s a setting on your phone. I checked here on my desktop and on my phone and the text is white on a charcoal background. Sorry about that.

I would like to volunteer as tribute for Peeps. I own my own business and work when I want. I also used to run a book blog and write book reviews. Hit me up.

I didn’t realize I needed to log in. I apologize.

  10. I genuinely can’t believe that this isn’t an app that everyone has on their phone. I’m an old school member at Runpee and use it every single time I’m at the movies (I’m also an A-List member, so that’s once a week). Is there any possibility of selling your backend work to be part of a bigger app? Fandango or AMC/Regal themselves? That would be a dream – make millions off of your hard work. How about asking users to donate to a fund to do an advertising campaign on Noovie? That would rule.

    1. Thank you. That’s really kind of you to say. Actually, I do share the RunPee data with AMC. They have our “Peetimes” in their app. But it’s a bare bones implementation. And I don’t make a million dollars off of it. 🙂 But it’s a nice extra check once a year.

    2. Also, I love your YouTube Channel. I left a comment for you. 🙂

I have an Android and I can’t place an “expected movie rating” in the People’s pole. Anyone else have the same (small) issue?

    1. You have to go to the Peetimes screen to input the “expectation” rating. My hope is that people will only add the expectation rating if they are about to see the movie. It’s not really valid to add it after the movie has ended.

Your transparency is refreshing. Thanks for all the hard work and the cool, unique, app!

  13. Three questions: I used to collect peecoins by watching ads. Did someone stop monetizing them for you?
And, 2: I wanted to text or enail a link to your app to my brother, but don’t see an icon for that— would it be good to add that to this article?
    Thanks,
    Lee Henderson

    1. Hi Lee. Thanks for the comment. To answer your questions.
      1) I decided to make the app 100% free and go with a donation model. So far the income has remained about the same as before. It’s slowly dropping, but not precipitously.
      2) That’s a good point. I think I’ll add something to the RunPee app to make it easier for people to share. There are links on every blog page to go to the download options at Google Play and Apple App Store. If you want to share manually then just use:
      https://runpee.com/iphone
      https://runpee.com/android
Those links will take someone directly to the app store page for the RunPee app.

  14. Hi Dan, did your Venmo handle change since this post first went live?? Searching by @RunPee in Venmo doesn’t return any results, but there is a @RunPeeApp handle with your name on it; I just want to make sure that’s the right one.

    1. Yes, I changed my Venmo. The updated RunPee app uses the new one. Sorry for the confusion.

  15. I unlocked the infinite peecoin a good while back. I admit to not using the app primarily for peetimes but for end credit scenes. I also really like the reviews left by all the Peeps. I’m adding myself to the subscriber list to keep this bad boy running

    1. Hi Luke. Thanks for the support. I think a lot of people use the app mostly for the Anything Extra info. But like my grandpappy used to say: it’s better to have the RunPee app and not need it than to need it and not have it. 🙂

I sent a donation to you last month of $10 on Zelle. It is not showing up on my app.

    1. Hi Steven. Thank you for the donation, or at least trying to donate. I checked my Zelle history and I don’t see any donation. And it wouldn’t show up in the app anyway because unfortunately there’s no way to integrate Zelle with the RunPee app. I’m going to add the ability for users to manually update how much they have donated, just so it’s reflected in the app. The only way the RunPee app can “know” about a donation is if the in-app payment system is used via Google or Apple.

Hey Dan, been using your app for a looong time! Love it and your dedication. Thank you. After your long missive, maybe have a “Donate” via PayPal or Venmo button?

    1. Hey Matt. Thank you. That is really thoughtful.

There is a donate button in the app for both PayPal ([email protected]) and Venmo (RunPeeApp). Are you subscribed? If so, you may not see that option. You can email [email protected] if you need help.

  18. Dan I love your app! Long time user bought “Infinity pee coins” back in the day. Will keep supporting you with every movie I see. Thank you for all you do.

    1. Thanks Angela. I deeply appreciate that.

  19. I love this app and have had it for years! I’ve told many of my friends about it too. I bought the lifetime pee coins way back when but still send donations … happy to support all your great efforts! Just sent another. Hope that helps keep you going!

    1. Thank you! We’re going well. Not great, but I’m too committed to this to ever let it die. As long as there are movies in theaters we’ll be adding Peetimes.
