Breaking Down Love, Death & Robots episode by episode

I’ll try to add a little bit for everyone here. To start off I have a brief non-spoilery review of each episode. Following that, I grouped the episodes into Funny and Thought-Provoking groups in case you really only want to see one or the other. Finally, I have a list of my favorite episodes. I’d love to hear in the comments what your favorites were.

Review of all Episodes

exit-strategies
Ep1 > Three Robots: Exit Strategies Three robots walk into the post-apocalypse, and take a whirlwind tour of humankind’s last attempts to save itself.

Thoughts
A good light-hearted comedy. There are many funny lines. I love the dry humor of the pyramid-bot. I could see a series with just these three characters being worth watching.

Ep2 > Bad Travelling
Ep2 > Bad Travelling Release the Thanapod! A ship’s crew member sailing an alien ocean strikes a deal with a ravenous monster of the deep.

Thoughts
This is one of my favorite episodes of season three. There’s not much in the way of humor, but it’s very thought-provoking. I think this would make an excellent full-length film.

Ep3 > The Very Pulse of the Machine
Ep3 > The Very Pulse of the Machine
When an exploratory mission to a Jovian moon ends in disaster, the lone survivor must begin a perilous but mind-expanding journey.

Thoughts
Another one of my favorites. I love the animation style. It reminds me of the animated movie Heavy Metal from my childhood. I think a lot about the nature that extra-terrestrial life might take on. This really stretches the bounds on what might be possible.

Ep4 > Night of the Mini Dead
Ep4 > Night of the Mini Dead
The apocalypse is conceived – literally – in a graveyard in this biting zombie satire, which starts with some cheeky cemetery sex and accelerates into a walking dead invasion of everywhere – from downtown LA to the Vatican.

Thoughts
I wish I could watch this short episode frame-by-frame. So many hilarious little jokes in there.

Ep5 > Kill Team Kill
Ep5 > Kill Team Kill
US Special Forces are trained to neutralize any threat — even a cybernetic killing machine created by the CIA. Their secret weapon? A sense of humor.

Thoughts
This was the first disappointment. It tried too hard to be funny and consistently missed the mark.

Ep6 > Swarm
Ep6 > Swarm
Two human scientists study the secrets of an ancient alien entity — but soon learn the horrible price of survival in a hostile universe.

Thoughts
This is my absolute favorite episode of the season. I was left thinking that this Swarm was really very similar to a human body, full of immune cells, blood cells, organs, etc. that all combine in an immensely complicated system to create us. If you think of each cell as an individual then you get close to what the Swarm is. The story even mentions that many of the “animals” that make up its complex system were once individuals that tried to invade it but were instead assimilated into the swarm. Think about the bacteria in our guts that keep us alive. We’re really no different.

Ep7 > Mason's Rats
Ep7 > Mason’s Rats
Welcome to the Ratpocalypse. Farmer Mason knows he has a real pest problem when they start shooting back. Bloody Hell.

Thoughts
This was one of my favorites and hit the sweet spot between humor and thought-provoking. I felt like this story existed in the Firefly universe. I wonder if anyone else noticed that. At any rate, a fantastic episode with a good ending. More please.

Got this back when I was pregnant, but I’ll be keeping it forever, it’s just so handy. I don’t go to the movie theater that often (even back before quarantine when you actually could…) but I make sure the app and the movie list are all current and updated, cause it’s so handy! It’s great for running late cause you can read their summary, obviously awesome for bathroom or snack breaks mid movie, and I also love that it tells you if there’s anything after the credits which is very handy.

Ep8 > In Vaulted Halls Entombed
Ep8 > In Vaulted Halls Entombed
Deep in the mountains of Afghanistan, a squad of Special Forces soldiers has the dangerous job of recovering a hostage held by terrorists. But the evil they encounter as they venture deep underground is far more ancient and terrifying.

Thoughts
This one didn’t do anything for me. I’m not even sure what they were trying to get at with the story. Nothing was explained by the ending. I could have done without watching this one.

Ep9 > Jibaro
Ep9 > Jibaro
A deaf knight and a siren of myth become entwined in a deadly dance. A fatal attraction infused with blood, death and treasure.

Thoughts
This was the one episode that I wish I could un-see. But, I’ve noticed others who placed it at the top of their list. I found it to be frenetic and gross and not in a cartoony way as some of the other episodes were. I wish the season had ended with Mason’s Rats. But the last two episodes of the season were completely skippable for me.
