The Sixth Sense (1999)
- Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense is one to watch multiple times! Released in August 1999, the supernatural thriller stars Bruce Willis as psychologist Malcolm Crowe and Haley Joel Osment as Cole Sear.
Whether it’s discovering that Malcom has been dead throughout most of the story or spotting clues from a handful of actors about hidden truths, the film has enough to tickle your instincts.
That makes little wonder why the $40 million production became a huge commercial success. It earned $672.8 million worldwide, including more than $293.5 million in North America.

The Prestige (2006)
Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige takes the idea of a twist movie and turns it into a magic trick. The 2006 Victorian-era film has Christian Bale playing Alfred Borden, while Hugh Jackman plays Robert Angier.
The story follows two magicians whose professional rivalry becomes an obsession. The biggest mystery involves Borden’s version of “The Transported Man:”

Once you know that, the main characters’ behavior becomes easier to understand. Their relationships, arguments, and strange sacrifices all carry new meaning.
An adaptation of Christopher Priest’s novel, The Prestige had a $40 million budget. Box Office Mojo records a worldwide gross of about $109.7 million.
Gone Girl (2014)
David Fincher’s Gone Girl takes a different approach than many other films
Ben Affleck plays Nick Dunne, whose wife disappears on their fifth wedding anniversary. Rosamund Pike plays Amy Dunne, with Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry in important supporting roles.
Nick’s behavior seems suspicious all through. His marriage looks troubled while the media turns against him, but all that continues until Amy’s perspective changes everything.
A second (or third) viewing could amplify the fun in Rosamund Pike’s performance. You already understand what Amy is doing, so her early scenes carry a different energy. Check out her expressions, listening carefully to her explanations, and you have a potentially breathtaking watch on your second (or subsequent) views.
Us (2019)
Jordan Peele’s Us is another movie that deserves a careful rewatch.
Lupita Nyong’o stars as Adelaide Wilson and her mysterious double, Red. Winston Duke plays Gabe, while Elisabeth Moss, Shahadi Wright Joseph, and Evan Alex also have major roles.
The story begins with the Wilson family visiting Santa Cruz. Their vacation turns terrifying when four strangers arrive at their home. The strangers look exactly like them, and that is already unsettling.
But the final revelation changes Adelaide’s story completely. Her childhood encounter at the Santa Cruz funhouse was not what you initially believed. Then, you’re almost eager to rewind the movie or plan your rewatch sooner than planned.
On your second view, watch how Red moves and speaks and notice Jason’s actions alongside the strange details surrounding the family’s past
Blink Twice (2024)
Zoë Kravitz’s Blink Twice is the newest film on this list. Released in August 2024, the psychological thriller stars Naomi Ackie as Frida and Channing Tatum as billionaire tech entrepreneur Slater King.
Kravitz directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with E.T. Feigenbaum, and it was her feature directorial debut.
Frida is invited to Slater’s private island with a group of wealthy friends. At first, everything feels like an extravagant vacation, but things become strange fast.
People forget conversations. Events do not match Frida’s memories. The island’s perfect atmosphere begins to feel increasingly threatening. The major revelation is that the women have repeatedly been drugged to erase their memories.
The second viewing becomes interesting as you can now spot the clues in Frida’s behavior and the other women’s reactions. Details that seemed random become evidence.
Then, you have an ending that adds another twist. Frida eventually takes control of Slater’s company and uses the same memory-erasing system against him. Talk about a fitting conclusion to a movie built around unreliable memory.
Your Turn
The best twist movies don’t become pointless after the secret is revealed. Essentially, they become different movies.
The Sixth Sense changes Malcolm’s entire existence while The Prestige transforms magic tricks into evidence. Gone Girl makes Amy’s performance more revealing while Us turns background details into clues. Lastly, Blink Twice makes forgotten memories crucial.
It’s the real test of a great twist:
A cheap one exists to shock you once, a worthy one makes you want to plan your rewatch as soon as possible.
