Me: How does a comedy/drama/fantasy movie starring the uber talented Anne Hathaway and hugely underappreciated skills of Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses, We’re the Millers, ect.) sound? Is that something you’d be interested in seeing?
You: Yeah, maybe, what’s it about?
Me: Well, that’s the problem. I could give you a brief synopsis, but the less you know about “Colossal” the more you’ll like it. If you take my word for it, then find this movie on your favorite streaming service and watch it ASAP. If possible, try not to even look at the movie poster. Seriously, the less you know the better. (That’s why I didn’t include the movie poster, but a picture of Anne Hathaway from the movie, here in this review.)

Colossal came out in 2016. I never heard about it, and it’s my job to know about movies. Clearly, this movie didn’t break into wide release or we would have done Peetimes for it. I only discovered the movie by a reference someone made in a YouTube video.
What I can tell you is this movie fits well in the genres that IMDb lists for it: comedy, drama, fantasy. And, at its core, the movie is about relationships and alcohol abuse.
What people are saying
about the RunPee app.
Best app ever!
RunPee is the only app we use before movies and afterward. not only does RunPee tell you when it’s a good time to leave the theater, kids these days ask if there’s anything during/after the credits, and RunPee lets parents know when there might be some thing that a kid might miss!
RunPee has tidbits, ratings, leave the theater times, and lengths. This is THE VITAL APP for watching any movie!
We used it when my wife was pregnant, and we have recommended it to every pregnant gal we know! How else can you enjoy a movie when you have to go out so often?!

I was entertained throughout the roller coaster ride of Colossal that goes from confusion, to joy, to…a very, very, dark place…and then wraps it up beautifully. At RottenTomatoes the critics give the movie an 81%, while the audience gives it a shockingly low 59%. I rarely agree with the critics, but wow, 59% from the audience? This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a good long while. There’s no question I’d give it an A+.
The movie is brilliantly written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo, a Spanish writer/director. He has a few other English speaking movies that I can’t wait to check out. I’ll review them here when I do.
If you do watch this movie, then please do me a favor and pop back here and drop a comment about what you think.
Creator and developer of the RunPee app. When something doesn’t work right in the app it’s pretty much his fault. 🙂
Aspiring author. Would like to finish his “Zombie Revelations” trilogy if he could break away for working on RunPee and the cottage he’s building for RunPee Mom.

But what is the movie abooooout?
Ha. I know. I saw Colossal based solely on your say so. But I need someone to talk to about it. I have a lot of thoughts.
I tracked it down on Netflix and gave it a watch. At first I was a bit dubious, I mean that huge plot hole… who in their right mind would kick out an inhibitionally challenged Anne Hathaway?
But then it started going down one route only for it to suddenly take an unexpected turn. Then another theme developed… and another. And then, just as fears of it developing into cinematic spaghetti were rising, it resolved onto the main storyline. However merely knowing what the story was didn’t stop the surprises which came via the character developments.
As Dan said, it’s better going into this without knowing too much about it hence the deliberate vagueness as opposed to my usual waffle!
Do yourself a favour… find this and watch it.
Hey Rob. Really glad you enjoyed this movie. I’ve seen it three times. Each time new details pop out. It’s so nice to watch an unexpectedly good movie.
You’re right about the plot hole though. Big, huge, plot hole. 🙂
Someone email me and tell me about the plot hole. I forgot the details of this film…
The “plot hole” was a joke. Rob was saying that it’s totally impossible for any man to kick Anne Hathaway out of his apartment. 🙂
