Movie Review – The Invisible Man

invisible-manThere’s no question that Elisabeth Moss gets an A+ for her performance in this movie. The movie may be titled The Invisible Man, but it was all about the Invisible Man’s wife — Cecilia.

Elisabeth Moss is in almost every single scene of the movie; plus, she’s the only actor in many of those scenes. I’d love to go back and watch the movie just to record the amount of time Moss is alone on the screen, acting in space with nothing else there.

If a less talented actress had be cast as Cecilia, those long isolated scenes would have begun to feel redundant, but they didn’t. Not once did I think, “Oh great, another scene of Cecilia alone in a room.”

Masterful writing and directing by Leigh Whannell

But Moss didn’t carry this movie by herself. She had Leigh Whannell as both writer and director. Clearly, Leigh had a vision of what he was doing and executed it masterfully — almost, but more on that later.

Writer/Director Leigh Whannell did his homework. The Invisible Man has a Shining-esque feel to the pacing and tension.

If you’re not familiar with Leigh Whannell, he’s the writer behind the SAW and Insidious franchises. Clearly, he has mastered his craft with 20 scripts produced into movies. The Invisible Man is his 4th directorial job. I’m looking forward to seeing his future work, of which I’m sure there will be many, even though I’m not a fan of horror movies.

My one critique is that there are a few plot holes in the story. Actually, not the story so much as how events happen that wouldn’t really work in real life. It’s a minor point I’ll cover below that doesn’t detract from the enjoyment of the movie.

Below are a few points that will get into spoilers. Please don’t read any further until after you watch the movie.

Spoilers ahead

As soon as James Lanier and his daughter Sydney were introduced I thought: they are good looking black characters; if either one of them gets killed I’m downgrading my rating. It’s so pathetically stereotypical to kill the good looking black guy, especially when he’s a police detective, or his innocent daughter.

I’ve loved this app for years and use it at the theater and home. Super easy to use and so helpful to know when it’s a good time to run for the restroom. I notify my kids when it’s close to time, so I don’t end up running them to the restroom multiple times. (Updated review from 4 to 5 . I’d had an issue with the app while at the theater and it was quickly resolved with FANTASTIC customer service. Thanks, RunPee!)

Fortunately, Whannell didn’t go for the cheap and obvious. Instead, he surprisingly killed the sister. I thought she might get killed, but certainly not when it happened. That was really well done.

The plot hole that I have a problem with is that after Adrian’s brother Tom is unmasked, and Adrian is found tied up at the house, we’re lead to believe that Adrian gets off scott-free. But how exactly was the suicide faked? We saw pictures of Adrian’s body. At some point an official certificate of death has to be issued. How exactly did that work? And faking one’s death is a criminal offense. Adrian isn’t going to get out of this as easily as it was portrayed in the movie. Or, did I miss something? (It happens. I’m sometimes distracted taking notes for the Peetimes.)

The Invisible Woman

Lastly, I’d like to mention that the best scene in the entire movie was the last. Cecilia’s gradual transition to a faint smile at the very end is all we needed to see to know that there is clearly going to be an Invisible Woman sometime soon. I can’t wait.

Grade: B+

About The Peetimes: There are a lot of long slow scenes in this movie, but sometimes when nothing is happening, something is happening, you know what I mean? I highly recommend the 3rd Peetime. It’s near the middle of the movie and there’s no action or suspense in that one. The 1st Peetime is decent, but there’s building tension throughout and something important happens shortly after. Both the 2nd and 4th Peetimes are for emergencies only. I’m watching you and I’ll know if you use either one of them. Sorry, just trying to set the mood. 🙂

There are no extra scenes during, or after, the end credits of The Invisible Man. (What we mean by Anything Extra.)

  1. I don’t mind a ‘gimmick’ if it’s done well. Like in 1917 or A Quiet Place. It sounds like this ind of has that going on with Moss acting to the air for an hour. 😉

John Cena had a cameo, but we all missed it. When asked why, Cena explained “You can’t see me.”

  3. lol, that sounds like something Cena might say. In fact, I haven’t seen him in a long time… Hummmmm… 🙂

You mentioned about Adrian faking his death being a crime. Am I right in thinking it’s been setup to make it look like Tom did it, not Adrian? Hence, why Adrian isn’t in trouble?

WARNING – Spoilers ahead —I think on the plot hole you spoke about, you missed some of the movie, there was the part where Adrian said (After he was rescued) that it was Tom (His brother) who did the whole thing, that he drugged (and took the pictures) and tied Adrian up, and you know life today you can pretty much pay off anyone as there was no body in a morgue to look at , it was just pictures of Adrian in a pool of blood, and Adrian put it all on his brother as remember his brother was His lawyer and in the will it said that all Adrians money goes to Cecilias, BUT that is only on the condition that she is not found mentally ill or commits a crime, (Which both things “Happened”) so this would give the money to Tom and that is why he planned the whole thing.

  6. Hey Michael. I didn’t miss any of the movie, but maybe I misunderstood something during the movie. I thought it was accepted as part of the story that Adrian faked his suicide, or something. Honestly, it’s been 5 years since I saw this movie. Actually, it’s only been 10 months, but everything pre-Covid feels like 5 years ago. 🙂

I hope there’s an Invisible Woman movie. If so I’ll probably watch this again and pay closer attention this time. Which is easy, since I won’t be doing Peetimes.

Sorry I did not mean to imply you missed any of the movie, that is just what I thought was said by the Police officer Friend, and that is why he agreed to be outside the house to see if he and Cecilia could catch him in a lie to say it was Adrian who did all of it and not his brother, (Remember she was crying saying I will come back if you are just honest with me, and when he would not and she felt she had no other option she did what she thought she had to do) And I know EXACTLY what you mean about feeling like it has been years ago, I think this was one of the last new movies I saw before the theaters closed, and when they only reopened for about a month all I saw was classic movies as that was all that was shown at the theaters near me (Regal theaters)

  8. I read that Regal has shut their doors nationwide for now. My closest theater is a little “AMC Classic” and they’re only open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

I know its sad, we have 12 Regal theaters here, there is still 2 AMC’s, a brendon, and a couple galaxy and century, but they are about 20 miles away (I live in Las Vegas) But I like to go to the movies during the day and none are showing movies before 5pm Monday-Friday and the weekends they start at 3pm. So sad, I do not like to see “new” movies that have came on at home as its not the same experience
