I’m on board for the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Also, it might make me rewatch Ghostbusters 2. MAYBE. Not sure I can stomach it — number 2 was that bad. But really, this is the time to pull this series out of the dust bin, since most of the main players are still at large and available. We lost the greatly beloved Harold Ramis in 2014, but still have Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts, and Ernie Hudson available to reprise their iconic Ghostbuster roles.
Apparently, Rick Moranis isn’t acting anymore, but never count a good Key Master out:

Is this a Ghostbusters 2, 3, or 4?
It all depends. Do you consider the ‘soft’ reboot with the all-female cast as part of the actual series, or is it just a bit of What If type, multiverse fun? Will Ghostbusters: Afterlife be number 4, making this a full franchise? (Note: A franchise is 4 or more movies in a shared universe. We consider three movies a trilogy.)
I’m not sure how they might incorporate the femme Ghostbuster reboot (2016), but they probably could come up with a way, if there’s a will (and of course, a Chris Hemsworth). Almost everyone from GB had a cameo in the female Ghostbuster movie, so the interest is there. I liked it. Didn’t love it, but it was better still than Ghostbusters 2. 😉
Then there’s the notorious fan hatred of Ghostbusters 2. If you personally don’t consider that one canon, then perhaps Afterlife is more of a Ghostbusters 2, in the same way that Terminator: Dark Fate skips right over all the unpopular Terminator films after 2. Or 3. I don’t even remember anymore. As Deadpool once said, it’s hard to keep these timelines in order anymore.
Here’s the (very) short teaser trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, scheduled to emerge from their ghostly cocoon fully as a film in the summer of 2020 (NOTE: it’s now 2021 and GB 3 is coming out this week — Nov 18).
RunPee Dan says of this teaser: “They hit all the right notes!”
So, it’s the next chapter in the original franchise…
Entertainment Weekly learned exclusively that Jason Reitman will direct and co-write an upcoming film set in the world that was saved decades previously by the proton pack-wearing working stiffs in the original 1984 movie, which was directed by his father, Ivan Reitman.

“I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans,” Reitman says. “This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”
