NEW in theaters: Last Night in Soho Last Night in Soho blew me away. From the very first scene, I was captivated by Thomasin McKenzie. I first saw her in Jojo Rabbit — she was great in that — but she was stupendous in Soho. I’d label my reaction to her as mesmerized throughout the entire film. I want to see a lot more of her.Grade: A+ |

NEW in theaters: Antlers I have seen pretty much every horror movie out there, and this one just didn’t stack up. I guess I could say if I hadn’t seen all these other horror movies I would give it a B, but alas I have seen them all and can think of many, many more horror films that are way better. Grade: C+ |

Movie Review – A Mouthful of Air I’m grading this movie on its technical and artistic merits. Because if I graded it on how it made me feel, I’d give it an F. Maybe that was the point, to make the audience feel like crap.Grade: A+ |

Movie Review – Gunpowder Milkshake All I knew going in was that the cast included Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Michelle Yeoh, and Paul Giamatti…that was enough! Throw in the précis describing it as an assassin reunites with her mother and her lethal associates to take down a crime syndicate and protect an eight-year-old girl. Considering that I count Hanna, Lucy, Ava, Anna, Atomic Blonde, and Nikita among my favourites, the only surprise is that I hadn’t heard of Gunpowder Milkshake earlier! Grade: A- |

Indie Documentary Review – I’m An Electric Lampshade I’ll be honest and say that I’m not sure how much of I’m An Electric Lampshade is documentary and how much is fiction. It could be, as it seems at first glance, a film about a man risking everything to take the plunge and become a performer. It could be a film about a man risking everything to take the plunge and make a film about a man who dreams of becoming a performer. Either way, it was an interesting and entertaining film and I think Doug McCorkle could go on to do a lot more. Grade: B+ |
