Movie Review – Morbius

morbius_header
This is from a scene three minutes into the movie. I think this is a hidden message from Jared Leto to stop watching now before it’s too late.

Morbius is an old-school superhero movie. And I don’t mean that in a good way. It’s entirely unimaginative. There wasn’t a single aspect of this movie that impressed. If this movie had come out 25 years ago then we could have at least been impressed with the special effects, but by today’s standards, it was just, meh.

What more do you need to know?

If you want to read more Morbius bashing then read on, but there will be spoilers.

The central plot of the movie, which revolves around Morbius and Milo, feels like it was lifted from the first chapter of How to Write Superheros For Dummies book. The antagonist isn’t someone we feel the slightest bit of sympathy for. The final battle felt rushed and incomplete. Like, that’s it? It was that easy?

The romantic side story was a complete waste of time. It seemed like they were going for a platonic relationship between Morbius and Martine until the second half of the movie and then changed their minds. What’s unfortunate is that there was plenty of potential to add some real meaningful depth to the movie and the romance if it were done correctly.

I have to say that Jared Leto did an admirable job, but he could only take an uninspired script so far. A great script can turn average actors into award winners, but great actors can’t salvage a poorly written script. I hate to single people out for poor work, but two of the writers on this movie are Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless. Both have worked together on four previous movies: Gods of Egypt (5.4 at IMDb), Power Rangers (5.9), The Last Witch Hunter (5.9), and Dracula Untold (6.2). With that track record how exactly do you get picked to write the script for something like Morbius, which currently has a 4.8 rating at IMDb. At some point don’t you have to, you know, have success in order to get promoted?

I guess on the bright side, Morbius makes DC look better.

This is a great app. I wish more people would support it

This app provides info about movies, reviews, ratings from people who have seen it before and after viewing. It has links to info about the movies. It let’s you know when there will be a lull in the action and how long it will last. If you want to know what happens during that time, you can check the brief synopsis (you have to click a link, so no accidental spoilers). It has a timer you can set (silent) to alert you to a break. It also tells you whether there is anything extra during or after the credits. It’s really a wonderful app. I’ve subscribed for a couple of years to support the developers, but I noticed some of the links to provide feedback didn’t seem to work today. They also made it free, with voluntary donations to see the pee-times. If you haven’t tried it, I encourage you to do so, and subscribe if you like it. I really hope the app is supported so it can continue to be maintained!

Developers note: RunPee doesn’t make much money but it supports itself nicely. Donations are appreciated, but not required. We’ll add as many movies to the database as we can until there are no more movie theaters.

I thought the same thing when I saw it, The flying thing looked terrible, and the bat thing was done already in Nolans Batman so nothing new here. And it seems like Marvel is just phoning it in now, as they think the die hard fans will watch anything with the Marvel name to is, and I am sure they will, but Eternal was terrible, this was bad, and even I really like Black Widow in other movies, her solo film was not that good either. So it looks to me like DC is looking pretty good now as they are not afraid to use the same characters we like to see with different actors, so why can’t we get a new Iron Man, or Captain America

  2. Morbius is a Marvel character, but this movie has nothing to do with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is all on Sony, who has the rights to Morbius. But you’re right, Eternals was not inspiring. It easily falls in the bottom third of MCU movies. Which, you know, isn’t that bad. They can’t all be fantastic.

  3. Is this guy in the MCU then? In Phase 4? (Multiverse aside)

Do I need to watch this to understand his role going forward?

It really does seem to scream “DC movie!” And not in the good way.

  4. No, Morbius doesn’t have a role in the MCU. You definitely don’t need to see it.

Remember, Disney/MCU don’t own all of the Marvel characters. SONY owns the rights to Spider-Man, Morbius, Venom, and a few others.
