New Zealand Movie Theaters to Re-Open this Week

bloodshotThe government of New Zealand wants to promote a sense of ‘normalcy’, according to NZ’s Stuff site, by having people still be able to attend movies during the time of the CoVid-19 epidemic. As of this morning, according to the New Zealand Herald, movie theaters will officially reopen Thursday, May 14. The Herald reports “retail stores, malls, cafes, restaurants, cinema and other public spaces can reopen. All require physical distancing. Health services will also restart.”

While new movies still aren’t available — what with Hollywood on indefinite hiatus and all 2020 movies pushed away until November (the soonest) — smaller boutique cinema houses are able to show films released in the last few weeks before theater lockdown commenced, films like Onward and Bloodshot.

Also, cult films, short films, and “Kiwi classics” should be getting a new life, as people seek novel things to do when the world is on hold.

The theaters will be using social distancing techniques in the cinema, ensuring people sit far apart, and only allowing a certain number of movie goers in any screening room. At a Level 2 restriction level, there can be no mass gatherings of more than 100 people, so it’s likely the large movie theater chains can’t afford to open for business. Smaller, independent movie chains like NZ’s Roxy Cinemas are hoping to re-open for movie goers soon, Stuff.com reports.

The New Zealand Herald concludes: “The alert level will be reviewed in two weeks, and if the numbers are still looking good, gatherings of larger sizes will be permitted.”

Brilliant idea with great information

I’ve been using RunPee for a few years now and it’s basically a requirement of going to the movies for me. The best part of course are the “pee times” that give you cues, synopses and times for when you can pee without missing the most important parts of the movie. There is also information about the credits- length, extras and if there are any extra scenes at the wayyy end. Super helpful to just know that it is or isn’t worth staying. There is a timer function that will buzz your phone when it’s a good time to pee. I also appreciate that the app is very conscientious about it being an app you use in a theater- dark background, all silent alarms etc. I will always enjoy the experience of the theater even if I could watch things at home- but I’ve even used it at home to check for things like after credit scenes or other information too.

  1. When you do things right you get nice things, like movies in theaters. When you half-ass your way through a pandemic lockdown you get stuck with a huge debt, wasted time, and nothing but climbing death rates to show for it.

  2. I hope they don’t suffer as a result of bringing nice things back to our world.

However, if anyone can do this, NZ can. Take a look at the WorldOMeter site. New Zealand has had very few overall cases and an insanely low death rate.

Sadly, in the US, I think the two films scheduled for July will be an example of what not to do.

    SIGH.
