Movie Review – Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Quantumania: unfortunately, I’m underwhelmed after so much build-up to getting on track with the main storyline, post-Thanos.

Ant-Man isn’t the mightiest Avenger, but he was the MVP of Endgame, and his previous solo films were a ton of fun. I’m visiting our UK correspondent Rob Williams in Liverpool — and we found some great Peetimes — but it wasn’t that hard to do because the movie lost something after the first quarter-mark in the Quantum Realm.

This outing is certainly not bad or a waste of time. If you’re a big Marvel fan this deserves the large-screen treatment. Important things do happen, and this is probably Ant-Man’s last solo effort.

Marvel Is Usually Better

I’m giving this a B grade, Marvel-wise. Quantumania should have had more humor and some quiet interim scenes, especially among the family. This was a full-on gallop: poorly paced and exhausting. I know Marvel can fill up a three-hour run-time and not waste a single second, but I was barely amused or enthralled, which doesn’t bode well for our favorite Ant.

By the middle of the film, the ‘bizarre” stuff wasn’t as good as the wonderfully wacky things we saw in Spider-Man: Far From Home and Dr. Strange 2: The Multiverse of Madness. It wasn’t as creative as it should have been. There was a lot of filler for a relatively short MCU movie (it’s around two hours). There were many repetitive fights that didn’t use the Pym tech much at all…especially after the superior Ant-Man 1 and 2 fight scenes. The first two films are definitely worth a rewatch before you catch the third.

It seemed like Quantumania was mostly a set-up for the post Thanos Big Bad we’ve been waiting for. I’m keeping this vague in case you don’t know who this is.

(BTW, stick around to the very end because the extra scenes are important, and one is very fun.)

How Not To Do Greenscreen

The amount of greenscreen in Quantumania actually gave me a headache! I’ve never experienced that before. I feel bad for the actors because every scene, barring the framing device, was Paul Rudd and Co interacting with, well, nothing. I’m not sure what happened here exactly, because the Guardians of the Galaxy movies were largely green-screened, but the humor and heart (and incredible creativity) made me very happy and smiley. Same as with Thor: Ragnarok, with great fun and immense talent among the wild visuals.

So, while the ball has finally dropped on the big arc, Quantumania still felt like filler. Not bad stuff compared to some other big franchises, and a B is a good grade comparatively, but after my recent Ant-Man marathon I definitely expected better. I miss Thanos.

About The Peetimes: Jilly and Rob just saw Quantumania and came up with 4 good Peetimes. The 1st two are recommended. This is a fast-paced movie, but a lot of scenes are repetitive, making finding Peetimes relatively easy.

There are extra scenes during, or after, the end credits of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
