Indie Movie Review – All Joking Aside

all-joking-asideA few weeks ago I reviewed a documentary about a female comedian trying to make it as a stand up in the comedy clubs of New York City called Funny Pains and used my E.B. White quote, “Analysing humour is like dissecting a frog. Few people are interested and the frog dies of it,” so I won’t use it here.

But what we have here is a drama about a female comedian trying to make it as a stand up in the comedy clubs of New York City, called All Joking Aside. Raylene Harewood plays Charlene/Charlie, who has a rubbish job in retail by day, but is trying to make it as a comedian by night.

The opening scene is of her debut performance, from which she gets heckled off the stage by Bob (Brian Markinson). Her friend comforts her, and she goes back to her life away from the clubs.

And then the story develops… it turns out that Bob used to be a big deal back in the day, a trendsetter, an envelope pusher of the first water but, for reasons to be disclosed later, gave it all up. They meet up again a couple of times, Charlie finds out about Bob’s past, and decides to get him to be her mentor.

Insightful — and probably convincing

So far, so very A Star Is Born, and the filmmakers noticed that too! Bob says he doesn’t want to be her teacher, as they always die before the end of the movie. But, fortunately for the film he does work with her and we get some really interesting insights into the way comedians get their inspiration and, consequently, their material. I don’t have any experience of being a stand up, writing jokes, or performing in any way — so I can’t definitively say that it’s an accurate portrayal — but it all seemed pretty convincing to me.

The whole thing was entertaining from start to end and I really enjoyed it; from the cringing lows to the jubilant highs and all the in-betweens.  All right, there are some clichés… reflection of failed relationships from both sides and the overheard/misunderstood/misconstrued conversations but, by that far in, I was prepared to forgive almost anything.

This is a great app. I wish more people would support it

This app provides info about movies, reviews, ratings from people who have seen it before and after viewing. It has links to info about the movies. It let’s you know when there will be a lull in the action and how long it will last. If you want to know what happens during that time, you can check the brief synopsis (you have to click a link, so no accidental spoilers). It has a timer you can set (silent) to alert you to a break. It also tells you whether there is anything extra during or after the credits. It’s really a wonderful app. I’ve subscribed for a couple of years to support the developers, but I noticed some of the links to provide feedback didn’t seem to work today. They also made it free, with voluntary donations to see the pee-times. If you haven’t tried it, I encourage you to do so, and subscribe if you like it. I really hope the app is supported so it can continue to be maintained!

Developers note: RunPee doesn’t make much money but it supports itself nicely. Donations are appreciated, but not required. We’ll add as many movies to the database as we can until there are no more movie theaters.
