What a difference a TODAY makes

Yesterday ( December 19th, 2012 ) on the morning news TODAY Show Jenna Wolfe ( @JennaWolf ) had a short 3 minute segment talking about the trend for very long movies. You can see the video below. At the end of the segment Jenna mentions the RunPee app as a solution to the problem of needing to pee during the movie.

What does that sort of publicity do for the RunPee app? Of course it’s difficult to say precisely but there’s no doubt that it provided a huge spike in downloads.

Here’s what the downloads on iOS looked like before the segment.

It’s hard to read but that’s a 914% increase over the previous Wednesday. To be fair that can’t all be attributed to the TODAY Show. Since The Hobbit has come out app downloads have been running a bit higher than normal. But I think it’s safe to say that the publicity added at least 1,000 downloads to the norm.

Android downloads run consistently at about 10% of iOS downloads. Why? I have no idea. There are more Android devices out there so you would think that Android downloads would be higher. Apparently Androidians are reluctant to download apps. If that every equalizes then I stand to see a huge push in download numbers.

At any rate I made over $1,000 from the RunPee app yesterday – after Apple and Google get their 30%. Not bad for a day that I spend sitting in a theater re-watching The Hobbit in IMAX 3D.

This is a great app. I wish more people would support it

This app provides info about movies, reviews, ratings from people who have seen it before and after viewing. It has links to info about the movies. It let’s you know when there will be a lull in the action and how long it will last. If you want to know what happens during that time, you can check the brief synopsis (you have to click a link, so no accidental spoilers). It has a timer you can set (silent) to alert you to a break. It also tells you whether there is anything extra during or after the credits. It’s really a wonderful app. I’ve subscribed for a couple of years to support the developers, but I noticed some of the links to provide feedback didn’t seem to work today. They also made it free, with voluntary donations to see the pee-times. If you haven’t tried it, I encourage you to do so, and subscribe if you like it. I really hope the app is supported so it can continue to be maintained!

Developers note: RunPee doesn’t make much money but it supports itself nicely. Donations are appreciated, but not required. We’ll add as many movies to the database as we can until there are no more movie theaters.
