I wanted to like this movie. Based on the trailers it had the makings of something new and fun. Meh, they tried and failed.

My biggest gripe, the one I can’t get past, is the lack of character development. Had they given us a little more, no had they given us a lot more backstory the movie would have been better. I understand what the movie makers were doing, they gave us just enough to get through the movie so that the ending wraps it all up and our guesswork is over. Most of the time. I like filling in the blanks and keeping the suspense going, but in The Menu, they withheld just a tad too much.

The acting was awesome and the chemistry between the characters came through loud and clear. The setting was perfect and the visualization was top-notch. That’s what makes me so sad. It had all the components of a truly fantastic movie.

That’s my take. I’m curious to see your comments and thoughts after seeing The Menu. I hope you enjoy it more than I did.

Grade: C-

About The Peetimes: There are 2 great Peetimes. I would go with the 2nd Peetime because you really can’t miss anything after this point.

RunPee is one of my favourite apps. No more googling a film before you see it and risking spoilers, this app has everything you need to know, not just the best time to go to the toilet. Dan, the developer, also offers an amazing customer service experience. I recently switched phones, and Dan was very generous in sorting things out with me as I moved over to my current system. If you’re an avid film watcher, this is the app for you!

I saw “The Menu” and I really liked it, I think maybe because you have to be in the service industry to understand some parts of it (I worked in restaurants in the early 80’s) this way you could really see how the chef felt, so to me this was a new and interesting movie, it was not a gore feast as a lot of movies go for now, this was like a old Hitchcock movie where the suspense grows and grows. And as for no back story, I thought they gave you enough on the main ones to understand why things were happening, 3 guys stole money (And they way it was shown was EXCELLENT) the lying out of date actor who is just trying to be relevant again, the snobby rich people who have to critic everything, and the rich couple who take for granted what they have and do not enjoy what they get. (Oh and do not forget the foodie who really is out of touch with everything) So to me I thought this was a good take on how you get tired of doing things and doing things for people who do not appreciate it. If I had to say one thing I did not like or really understand was the “chase” (That is all I will say on that because I do not want to ruin things for anyone) So for me I would give it a B

  3. I’ve got tickets booked for next week. At first I was a bit disappointed but, after seeing the comments, I’m intrigued again!

I hate to disagree with a fellow Runpeep but I thoroughly enjoyed it!

The cast, acting, and visuals were all great so that’s something we can agree on but where I wander away from Christene’s view is in the perceived lack of character development. Admittedly there wasn’t a lot, but there was enough to get the gist of what was going on and why the characters were where they were. It was also enough to develop the tension around Anya Taylor-Joy’s character.

I also appreciated that it wasn’t an excessively gore splattered affair. There were enough shocks to maintain interest but not so many as to induce that sense of horror apathy when you become numb to the carnage on screen.

All in all, I really enjoyed it.
