Movie Review – My Spy

my-spy (250x371)My Spy was made to appeal to kids, but it has enough adult humor to keep adults engaged, or at least awake.

There was actually a decent amount of humor and some genuine laugh out loud moments. My biggest gripe of the movie is that the action at the end didn’t live up to the buildup. It kind of feels like the writers (the brothers Erich and Jon Hoeber) couldn’t be bothered to polish the ending. That’s a real shame because they’ve written some genuinely good movies: RED, RED 2, Battleship, and The Meg. I’m not saying they’re going to take home any awards for those movies, but they didn’t lack for entertainment. Especially the RED duo.

It felt like the story built a lot of potential for the ending and then just dropped the ball. With a better ending this movie would be in the solid “B” range.

The movie earns it’s PG-13 rating because of language. The violence is really tame. There’s no blood and no on screen deaths.

I’m not entirely sure the message this movie gives to children is necessarily one parents will be thrilled with. Sophie, the little girl, uses blackmail and tricks to get what she wants. But at the same time she’s resourceful and confident. So it’s a mixed bag.

Grade: C+

About The Peetimes: I found two good Peetimes. One early in the movie and a better recommended Peetime around the 1 hour mark.

There are extra scenes during, or after, the end credits of My Spy. (What we mean by Anything Extra.)

Rated (PG-13) for action/violence and language

Brilliant idea with great information

I’ve been using RunPee for a few years now and it’s basically a requirement of going to the movies for me. The best part of course are the “pee times” that give you cues, synopses and times for when you can pee without missing the most important parts of the movie. There is also information about the credits- length, extras and if there are any extra scenes at the wayyy end. Super helpful to just know that it is or isn’t worth staying. There is a timer function that will buzz your phone when it’s a good time to pee. I also appreciate that the app is very conscientious about it being an app you use in a theater- dark background, all silent alarms etc. I will always enjoy the experience of the theater even if I could watch things at home- but I’ve even used it at home to check for things like after credit scenes or other information too.

  1. I think you liked this movie better than I did. It wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t clever. Taylor saw this at a drive-in theater and she said it was the worst movie she ever saw, so maybe I had a bad attitude going into it. Unlike her, I didn’t think it was bad, but I’d call it slightly below average. More like a C-.

I’m starting to think Dave Bautista needs to take a good look at his filmography. If he doesn’t want to be seen as a low-rent Vin or Rock, then he might want to be more selective. I just watched Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 again tonight, and he did such a lovely job there as Drax. I’d hate to see him lose all that goodwill with a run of subpar movies.

  2. Agreed, outside of GoTG Bautista has been in some less than stellar movies. I wonder what his selection process is, or what any actor’s selection process is like. I’m sure than many aren’t as concerned about the end product as the filming process. Maybe he liked the cast and crew he was working with and didn’t really care if this was a highly regarded movie.
