A word about 3D
I get motion sick fairly easily. So I was a bit apprehensive going in to see this in 3D. I usually avoid 3D screens, and on the occasions that I have experienced them, it was bad. Usually, 3D movies show a few scenes here and there in 3D, but the majority of the time you’re wearing those funky glasses for nothing.

Well, that’s not the case here. Cameron waited 10 years to make this movie because he wanted to do it right – which means he wanted to do it his way. The movie is 3D from beginning to end. And not just that, but it’s good 3D. Cameron doesn’t go for cheap gimmicks by randomly throwing things at the audience. Oh, sure there are a few, very few, times that something might make you flinch, but for the most part, the 3D experience just brings you deeper into the scene.

And I completely forgot that I was wearing the glasses and watching a 3D movie after about the first 30 minutes. The movie is that good. So see it in 3D or don’t even bother seeing it.

Stunningly beautiful
I’m going to go out on a limb and say that there has never been a more beautiful movie ever made. Pandora is breathtaking. You get that from the previews but you see so much more in the movie.

Pacing and story
Cameron is a master at pacing. No, he is the master at pacing. You’ll get pulled into the story and forget that you’re sitting in a movie theater even though the movie is 2 hours and 40 minutes long. The movie seamlessly switches back and forth between the avatar and non-avatar world. You’re never in a scene too long that it begins to drag. The action scenes are just long enough. Cameron never interjects additional action just to show off. He’s here to tell a story that he has worked and re-worked for years. That makes it tight.

Acting
Nothing more to say than it was perfect.

Bottom line
Cameron has secured himself in the director pantheon. In my opinion, he and Spielberg sit alone at the pinnacle of Mt. Director. Cameron put everything on the line and risked a great deal of money and his reputation. Both are going to get a huge boost from Avatar.

Oh, and Mr. George Lucas: You need to attend any workshops on directing that Cameron might offer. You could learn a thing or two from this man.

I’ve loved this app for years and use it at the theater and home. Super easy to use and so helpful to know when it’s a good time to run for the restroom. I notify my kids when it’s close to time, so I don’t end up running them to the restroom multiple times. (Updated review from 4 to 5 . I’d had an issue with the app while at the theater and it was quickly resolved with FANTASTIC customer service. Thanks, RunPee!)

When his brother is killed in a robbery, paraplegic Marine Jake Sully decides to take his place in a mission on the distant world of Pandora. 1. I haven’t seen Avatar yet, but it’s likely to happen over the next two days. I do think the trailer is also an important part of the impression a movie makes and that I did catch at the cinema a few weeks ago.

The trailer is glitzy. I’m just not seeing the revolution in technology and effects that everyone is talking about. Let’s be fair, there are video game cinematics today with as much, if not more, pretty stuff happening.

Will definitely come back here to comment when I’ve seen it. I think bladder tips are extra relevant for a movie with lots of blue people that is over 3 hours long. 🙂

  2. Where were you guys when I needed you!?! lol. I was about to burst during the epic battle scene! This movie is like nothing anyone has ever seen before. Sure, the plot is similar to other films, but nowhere has it been executed in this way.

3D was used to provide immersion for the first time and not as a gimmick. Amazing visuals. I cannot wait to watch it again!

Im not really mad at you RUNPEE! I just should not have had that WHOLE bottle of water.

  3. Beyond incredible experience. I am trying to decide which movie to bump from my Top Five now to make room for Avatar. 🙂

  4. @Samir, You probably didn’t see the trailer in 3D. 🙂

It is and there are no games that come close to the realism in Avatar. And did I mention 3D? 🙂

@David, That is one of the big downfalls of RunPee.com. We can’t yet see movies before they come out. So there won’t be any Peetimes yet for huge movie fans that must see the first possible showing. Hopefully we’ll get that taken care of soon.

  5. I really am giving my new Top Five serious thought. It’s been so long since I had to move things around like this that I can’t figure this out. Need to see Avatar again.

Want to see it in IMAX 3D!

  6. It was simply fantastic! Pandora is so beautiful and the epic war machinery brings nice contrast to it. Comparing this to Dancing with Wolves is pura lunacy, its so much more about this movie than just the basic concept. The final battle scene is pure brilliance with that trademark JC intensity and eye for action. The acting is also spot on! Quaritch is the most badass villain of the year. Saw it on Dolby 3D.

  7. A small easter egg Avatar
    A small easter egg

One Small, ever so small easter egg I found in the movie

In the credits, when they are showing the floating mountains, one of the shots shows the shadow of one of the dragon creatures as if the camera man is on the back of the bird!

Attention to detail in this movie is so good, such as adding Aurora Borealis in the shot where they move the outpost at night. I loved it!

Hell, I want to make a movie like Avatar.

    1. @easter egg, That is a very nice catch. I’ll look for it when I see it again.

  8. Oh here we go again. The feel good socialist movie of the year versus the evil empire of Lucas. Please STFU and grow a brain.

Every feel good liberal better learn to start lacing some boot straps for its the only way their going to wade through all the bull#$%^ their messiah freaks are piling on!!!

Avatar was good, not great. Lucas made all of this happened. If anything, Cameron should be licking Lucas feet right now. review = FAIL

    1. @Toons, Yeah, my feeling about Lucas is that he sort of got lucky. He did great with Star Wars and Empire. Everything thing else he did, and I mean everything, was mediocre at best. Remember Howard The Duck? When has Cameron disappointed? He does nothing but raise the bar with each and every film he makes.

I’m not really sure what you’re getting at about the messiah freaks. I haven’t read anything about it. Clearly you have some issues.

  9. Maybe Avatar should come with a disclaimer. Caution: Environmental Message Ahead!

    🙂

  10. Anna Novikov Avatar

  11. My #1 most favorite movie of ALL TIME!! Everything in it was GREAT!! Can’t wait to see it again! Would really be doing yourself a dis-service if you never got to see it in the theater 3D. SIMPLY AWESOME!!

  12. I have seen it twice. Saw alot of stuff I didn’t see the first time. Can’t wait to see it again.

    1. @Donnkit, I’m looking forward to seeing it at an IMAX theater. Something tells me that Avatar will be popping up on IMAX screens for a long, long, time.

  13. I love this movie. I have seen it five times, three in IMAX 3D which is even more spectacular than regular 3D. I would go see it again if I could. This is the first of it’s kind, I hope it won’t be the last.

    1. @Jeanne, I’m looking forward to seeing it again and this time in IMAX3D. The first time I saw it was just regular old 3D and it brew me away.

  14. A good movie. Old story line cowboys and indians with a future twist. (but I like cowboys and indians) See it once, after all, its a colorfull cartoon.

  15. Somebody will prompt. Whether it is necessary to expect continuation and during what period of time of this remarkable film?
