The Gambler

In “The Gambler,” Jim Bennett is a man in desperate need of change. Despite his privileged background, he’s drowning in self-hatred and misery, struggling to find a way out of his own life. As a literature professor, Bennet lectures his students on the emptiness of existence and the futility of it all. He shares a bleak and nihilistic worldview with anyone who will listen.

But his secret life as a high-stakes gambler reveals a different side to Bennett. He’s not in it for the thrill of the game or the chance to win big; he’s playing to lose. Strangely, it’s a form of self-punishment, a way for him to hit rock bottom and start anew.

As Bennett spirals into his addiction, he finds unlikely allies in his students. Amy, a waitress at an underground gambling den, shows him a different life outside his stuffy academic bubble. Dexter, a tennis prodigy, becomes a confidante and a sounding board for Bennett’s twisted philosophies. And Lamar, a star basketball player, offers Bennett a chance at redemption and a glimmer of hope for a future.

As played by Mark Wahlberg, Bennett is a complicated and conflicted character, both repulsive and sympathetic simultaneously. The supporting cast, including Brie Larson and Jessica Lange, bring depth and nuance to their roles.

The Card Counter

In “The Card Counter,” director and screenwriter Paul Schrader presents a character study that is both a departure from his past work and a continuation of his themes. This film features Oscar Isaac as the titular character, William Tell or Will Tell, a touring poker player. He keeps a journal in which he writes in immaculate cursive script, which only starts after he’s turned the motel room he occupies into white. Will is a man of discipline, and he has a lot of gambling wisdom to share, such as the only smart bet in red and black roulette.

But there’s more to Will than his poker-playing and gambling advice. He is haunted by memories of his time as a U.S. Army torturer in Abu Ghraib, trying to hold himself together. He recalls goading another inmate to kill him while in prison, but he’s still alive and looking for a reason.

Movie Watching Must Have!!

I go feral for this app. I love it so much and I wish everyone knew about it and used it. It is incredibly useful and I would be devastated if this app ever disappeared. Things I love: 1) the pee times! Itโ€™s so handy to know the best time to go and then read the synopsis of whatโ€™s happening while Iโ€™m gone. I never have to worry about missing the good bits! 2) knowing if there is a post-credits scene or not. This might be my fav feature because I would have missed out on some pretty critical scenes if it werenโ€™t for RunPee. 3) the movie review and viewer rankings. This info has made me watch some movies that I normally wouldnโ€™t and itโ€™s nice seeing things outside of my usual scope. 4) that itโ€™s a small family run business. I love shopping small and it really does feel like Iโ€™m part of the RunPee family! If you reach out to them, Dan will personally respond to you and he is so warm and helpful. GET THIS APP AND THEN SUBSCRIBE! It is absolutely worth it and youโ€™ll be using it again and again!

Tiffany Haddish and Tye Sheridan play characters who profoundly affect his life, but this film is not the most excellent hits package or a restatement of principles. It’s Instead a character study that explores Will’s search for meaning and redemption.

Vegas Vacation

Chevy Chase returns as Clark Griswold in the hilariously chaotic family adventure, “Vegas Vacation.” After a surprise trip to Sin City, the Griswolds quickly abandon their plans of togetherness in favor of their desires: gambling, partying, drinking, and even a flirtation between Ellen and Wayne Newton.

Meanwhile, the eccentric Cousin Eddie and his family add even more chaos to the mix. As the Griswolds navigate Vegas’s wild and unpredictable world, they encounter mishaps, trouble, and even a bit of luck. But ultimately, they learn important lessons about the actual value of family and love.
