Movie Review – Superman

I’ve lost count of how many Superman reboots or origin stories we’ve had over the years. But I can at least say that this Superman movie is uniquely different from all the others. And that’s not nothin’.

This might be the first time that the director of a new Superman movie upstaged the actor playing Superman. I know that’s the case for me. James Gunn brought a new flavor of action/superhero to the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Since it was announced that he would take over as the Tzar of DC I’ve been looking forward to seeing what he would come up with. And now I know. Or at least, I think I know.

David Corenswet

I honestly had no idea who Corenswet was until he was announced as the next Superman. I saw him in Twisters, but don’t remember him at all. I must admit, I’ve never been a Superman fan. The character is too overpowered and flawless. This Superman is far from that. I mean, the first shot we get of Superman is after he’s gotten his but kicked and needs to be carried. This is far different than the Henry Cavill Superman, who was awesome by the way, but it was a bit old watching him yawn his way through killing demigods like swatting flies.

As far as Corenswet’s acting, I’m going to give it a thumbs up. In fact, this version of Superman requires a lot more nuance to perform than most. He’s not as super-confident and can get rattled. This is a much more human Superman, which is exactly what he argues at the end of the movie.

Action

This might be where this Superman differs from previous incarnations the most. The action is more comical than the other movie adaptations. I’m not going to say it’s better, because to each their own, but I did like the refreshing take. That being said, there was much less excitement in the action sequences. Some of the scenes with the Justice Gang were okay, and I really liked Mr. Incredible, but the solo Superman fights were rather boring to me. I’m glad they weren’t dragged out any longer than they were.

The New DC Universe

One thing is for certain, it’s different than the previous DCU and honestly, it can’t get any worse. I mean, there were a few good movies in there. I enjoyed all of the Superman movies with Cavill, and WWI was great. But aside from that, it was pretty lackluster, at best. Some of the movies were downright unwatchable. (I’m looking at you Suicide Squad-version 1.)

And the entire superhero genre could use some variation. As awesome as Phase III of the MCU was, it’s time for a new direction. Oddly enough, the latest MCU movie Thunderboltsfeels more like a tonal shift from the superhero genre than does this Superman movie. I’m as shocked as anyone, but Thunderbolts was fantastic.

Grade: B-

Spoilers. Do Not Read Before Seeing The Movie
Is it just me, or did Superman-Clone look way too much like Hayden Christensen in Star Wars: III Revenge of the Sith? I’m glad the reveal didn’t come until late, because it was distracting every time I saw him.Was that on purpose?

About The Peetimes: I have three good Peetimes. I think the middle one is the best.

This is a great app. I wish more people would support it

This app provides info about movies, reviews, ratings from people who have seen it before and after viewing. It has links to info about the movies. It let’s you know when there will be a lull in the action and how long it will last. If you want to know what happens during that time, you can check the brief synopsis (you have to click a link, so no accidental spoilers). It has a timer you can set (silent) to alert you to a break. It also tells you whether there is anything extra during or after the credits. It’s really a wonderful app. I’ve subscribed for a couple of years to support the developers, but I noticed some of the links to provide feedback didn’t seem to work today. They also made it free, with voluntary donations to see the pee-times. If you haven’t tried it, I encourage you to do so, and subscribe if you like it. I really hope the app is supported so it can continue to be maintained!

Developers note: RunPee doesn’t make much money but it supports itself nicely. Donations are appreciated, but not required. We’ll add as many movies to the database as we can until there are no more movie theaters.

  1. Haven’t seen Superman (yet); but I have to disagree on your take on Thunderbolts. I miss the days when “bad guys” were just that, selfish characters, with selfish motivations who ultimately are delivered their “just” rewards. Instead of this “misunderstood” nice guy that become the norm in all recent superhero movies. I understand they you don’t want inappropriate fight images on screens kids will watch, but these outcomes are like participation awards – just diminishing the whole thing.

    1. I appreciate the variety of villains. You’re right, the bad/selfish villain can be rewarding to just see them get pummeled. That works in some stories. But in Thunderbolts, Bob isn’t the villain. He’s a victim. Valentina is the real villain, right? She has the selfish/power-hungry motive and uses Bob to get what she wants. Bob was just a guy suffering and looking for a way out. He’s the hero because he overcame the villain’s plot.

If anything, I would like to have seen Valentina get punished, but she maneuvered out of it, to fight another day.
