Movie Review – Cats

I must admit, I was a little hesitant about seeing this movie, because the trailer was not that enticing, given the over-dramatic look of the cats’ upgraded appearance. I am a huge Cats on broadway fan — so because I’m loyal, I figured I would give it a try. If you’ve never seen the broadway musical, you never will, unless you are a theatre major, a ballet enthusiast, or just simply a musical arts nerd.
Let me keep it real, Cats is merely a roll call of stray felines that introduce themselves musically; while at the same time, a few of them are vying for the title of the chosen Jellicle to descend into cat heaven and reincarnate into Cat 2.0.
The cast included some big names such as Jennifer Hudson, Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, Judi Dench (our beloved from 007 Skyfall), and James Corden. However, I wasn’t that impressed with James and Rebel Wilson’s role. Their humorous narrative seem a little overplayed to me. I was impressed with the agility of the cast and their convincing cat movements. On the other hand, I absolutely did not like that the characters looked so human; that was a turn off to me for sure. While I’m sure that was intentional by the directors to make them seem more human, hence, the final scene by Old Deuteronomy where she points out the commonality between humans and felines.

By the way, do cats really drink milk? My cat, Dominion ShakaZulu, does not. I am pretty sure I remember the veterinarian telling me that milk is bad for cats, yet I continue to see it on screen. But, I digress…. The songs were great and I think there were one or two new ones added to this reel. The length of the film was just right.
Of all the cat characters and introductions, my favorite is Railway Cat. He is super awesome and reminded me of Elton John and Gregory Hines.
Finally, I love experiences where the underdog (or cat in this case) comes out on top, and someone always has their back. I was bullied as a child and unfortunately, I didn’t have a Victoria Cat in my corner. Those scenes pulled at my heart strings.
Now, let me mention that the audience, during my viewing, laughed a lot, to the point I thought I was missing something, because they laughed so much and so hard. I am in San Francisco tonight so maybe they had smoked a little to much “devils lettuce” before arriving. When you see it, you let me know what was sooooo darn funny. IJS!
So there you have it, the cat’s out of the bag and I look forward to your feedback.

One of the most useful apps I’ve ever come across. I’ve used it for years and recommended it to all my friends. Even if I’m not the type to have to pee during movies often, being able to pull up the app and pass my phone to my mom/friend/grandma so that they know when to go to the bathroom has been invaluable. Because then I don’t have to summarize anything when they get back!!

You know, I’m tempted to see this bc of the star power alone. But to be honest, I saw Cats on Broadway when I was a child in NY…and I was bored bored bored. No plot. Just singing and dancing with no connective tissue.
I know some people like that. My mother watches all those reality singing and dancing shoes. And when I asked her last night about Cats, she had a great time when went. So I’m not the target audience. I prefer genre stuff (star wars, MCU, that sort of thing). I have terrible blockbuster tastes.
I do like Disney animated films and Pixar, so I’ve got that going for me. But I’m more excited about the new Ghostbusters….(praying it doesn’t suck).
Anyway, is it worth, idk, seeing Cats on the big screen just to see the spectacle?

I saw Cats at the theatre years ago and the plot and songs were pretty stupid..
I adore a good musical, but Cats ain’t one.
(I’m with your mom on watching any show with singing and dancing, there’s been some really great TV shows…)I thoroughly enjoyed them acting and dressing like Cats.
Other reviews have been quite shitty, and catty… So I’m thinking that the cool kids are all going to laugh and bash this movie, which may have been what you experienced at the showing.
Though it may be that the wording is really stupid and dated, and I doubt that’s been changed much.
It really threw me off when I first saw it.. So I’m not really looking forward to seeing this, though I want to see the cats move and dance, that looks phenomenal.-
Yessss! I agree with you. Maybe that’s why they were laughing so hard, These kind of remakes are tricky and this one is a bust to me.

I really can not understand why this film has received the battering that it has. At first I thought it was going to be a bit like ‘The Greatest Showman’ where the critics hated it but the public loved it. However all I see are amazingly vitriolic reviews by the viewing public (ranking at 2.8/10 on imdb.com) as well as the professionals. It’s getting to the point where I’m wondering if all these people have actually seen the film or have just spotted a bandwagon to jump on!
I shall now attempt to fly in the face of public opinion and say that I enjoyed it. I’ve actually been to see it twice this week. The tunes are nice and the dancing is gorgeous. I loved seeing Dame Judi finally getting a chance to be a cat especially after she had to drop out of playing both Grizabella and Jennyanydots in the West End premiere after snapping an Achilles Tendon in rehearsal.
Second time around I looked out for some of the CGI ‘mistakes’ that everyone was wittering on about. Judi Dench’s wedding ring can be seen… was it meant to be hidden? Look closely and you can see other cast members wearing rings. At one point I’m sure I saw someone with an Elastoplast on their hand! Her hands weren’t rendered? No! Her character is wearing a big fur coat and those are sleeves.
I too have seen it on stage. Not on Broadway or the West End but towards the end of the 1990’s tour at the Manchester Opera House. That performance clocked in at over two and a half hours and the film is a much more comfortable length.
In short I like the tunes, love the dancing, and was sold on the effects but then I went in knowing it was a fantasy musical which took the majority of it’s words from a 1939 series of poems and didn’t expect to see a documentary! I went to be entertained and I was!
