Movie Review – Bumblebee

Movie Review - BumblebeeI can’t say this movie met my expectations. Unfortunately, my expectations were pretty high, based on early reviews by critics that this was the fresh new face of a new take on the Transformers.

There’s a lot of good stuff in the movie. Most notably: Hailee Steinfeld as the lead character, Charlie Watson. She was a great choice for a tomboyish character who has gone through a traumatizing experience. She got as much out of her character as we could expect from any young actress. The faults I have are with the story, not her performance.

What I liked the most about the story is that they kept it small. This isn’t the “grand epic, fate of the planet is at stake” sort of movie. It’s just one Autobot trying to survive against two Decepticons.

What I disliked about the story is how forced it felt. There were numerous scenes that seemed crammed in just to have a payoff later, or even worse, provided no real substance to the movie.

For instance, the mean girls subplot was a complete waste. It’s enough that Charlie recently lost her father. To add the minor subplot of the mean girls there to hurt her did nothing to build the story.

My 6 year old niece was excited to see the movie with me. She watched attentively but seemed to get bored near the end. You can tell when a movie really grabs her, and this one didn’t.

Grade: B-

About The Peetimes: I have 3 nicely spaced Peetimes for this movie. I would recommend the middle one, because it’s fairly long and you can go over a little without getting lost. Only use the last Peetime if you think you can get back in 3 minutes. There’s an important scene that happens just as the Peetime ends.

There are no extra scenes during, or after, the end credits of Bumblebee. (What we mean by Anything Extra.)

This is a great app. I wish more people would support it

This app provides info about movies, reviews, ratings from people who have seen it before and after viewing. It has links to info about the movies. It let’s you know when there will be a lull in the action and how long it will last. If you want to know what happens during that time, you can check the brief synopsis (you have to click a link, so no accidental spoilers). It has a timer you can set (silent) to alert you to a break. It also tells you whether there is anything extra during or after the credits. It’s really a wonderful app. I’ve subscribed for a couple of years to support the developers, but I noticed some of the links to provide feedback didn’t seem to work today. They also made it free, with voluntary donations to see the pee-times. If you haven’t tried it, I encourage you to do so, and subscribe if you like it. I really hope the app is supported so it can continue to be maintained!

Developers note: RunPee doesn’t make much money but it supports itself nicely. Donations are appreciated, but not required. We’ll add as many movies to the database as we can until there are no more movie theaters.

  1. I’m with you on this. It has some nice beats between B and Charlie, and I found my attention drifting in the Decepticon scenes. They seemed over-the-top and took the pacing of the film off its rails, away from the scenes we came to see between Bumblebee and the girl. It was certainly small stakes, which I appreciated, but then they felt they had to cram the Big Bads in there. That was okay in ET, but here it just felt like the writers needed some kind of jeopardy, and MOAR ROBOTS (!!1!).

I could have seen entire film w/ just Charlie and BumbleBee. She did a great job acting to a CGI character. I hope her career takes off. She carried the whole film on her young back.

BumbleBee is a fan favorite, I and loved how he was portrayed here. But things felt a little disjointed by the end.

It was still my favorite film of the three I saw yesterday. B- sounds about right.

  2. I actually noticed Charlie’s acting with B during the movie and thought she was doing a great job considering she’s acting with a green screen, or inanimate object. That’s something not all actors can do.

    Very nice review.
I agree, the story is kinda not “ok” and not make sense much. Sometimes, the story feels like forced, not natural.
Acting of some actor looks kinda phony, “nocitable example” is john cena, seems like his acting is still somehow look “incredible” funny.
If i review this movie i will give it: 6.3/10.
