Let me say first off that I didn’t hate this movie. In fact I sort of enjoyed it even though I’m not remotely in the target demographic. And you have to give kudos to the writers and director for really nailing this genre. It takes real talent to master a genre so completely.

This is sort of the female version of Transformers. Gigantic machines that can punch through an air craft carrier and well endowed, heaving girls are to guys; as boys with piercing glances, furrowed abs and a deep dark side are to girls.

Here is my theory as to why this sort of movie is so popular. We all have our genetic programming. If you are a teenage girl then you automatically have a huge decision to make because you are now biologically capable of having children and therefore must choose a mate. In today’s world this may not actually happen for many years but a teenage female’s body is telling her that it’s time, now. That decision is going to have everlasting effects and thus we have teenage angst.

Kudos to the director for discovering so perfectly what female teenage angst looks like: head down, eyes up, scrunchy forehead. That is the default look that Bella has for everything.

Dad: Bella, what kind of cereal would you like for breakfast – Cheerios or Raisin Bran?

Bella: [ tilts her head down, looks up with her eyes and scrunches her forehead up ] Oh Daddy, I don’t know. I used to always eat Raisin Bran but I’ve been trying Cheerios recently and I really love both of them now. Part of me wants to go back to Raisin Bran. But If I do I’m worried that I’ll have to give up on Cheerios forever and I just really want the option to have Cheerios in my life. [ Tilts head down even further and look up with even more forehead scrunchyness. ] I think I’ll have Cheerios but think about Raisin Bran.

Dad: [ Rolls eyes and says under his breath ] Teenagers.

Come to think of it, Edward and Jake both put on angst-face a few times. I think when the DVD comes out we have a new drinking game. 🙂

Brilliant idea with great information

I’ve been using RunPee for a few years now and it’s basically a requirement of going to the movies for me. The best part of course are the “pee times” that give you cues, synopses and times for when you can pee without missing the most important parts of the movie. There is also information about the credits- length, extras and if there are any extra scenes at the wayyy end. Super helpful to just know that it is or isn’t worth staying. There is a timer function that will buzz your phone when it’s a good time to pee. I also appreciate that the app is very conscientious about it being an app you use in a theater- dark background, all silent alarms etc. I will always enjoy the experience of the theater even if I could watch things at home- but I’ve even used it at home to check for things like after credit scenes or other information too.

  1. What genre has been mastered by this movie? Mindless teenage dribble? Harlequin romance about wannabe vampires and werewolves? I used to be a teenager and I never once saw anyone act the way these characters do. Edward is a creepy stalker, Jacob is a douchebag, and whatsherface is so forgetable. The most interesting thing about these movies is what the actors do off the set.
