Movie Review – The Little Mermaid

the-little-mermaid_hero

Hopefully, my 10-year-old grand-niece will go see this movie this weekend, and I’ll ask her to write a review because I can’t imagine why anyone would care what a 56-year-old man, who doesn’t care for musicals, thinks about a kid’s musical. But you’re here, so here goes.

I guess the singing was pretty good, but there wasn’t much of it. Especially from Ariel (Halle Bailey). I don’t think she had more than two songs. What she did sing was quite good. She has an amazing voice. My favorite song was a rap duet between Sebastian (Daveed Diggs) and Scuttle (Awkwafina). I would love to see a video of them rapping together because it sounds like they were having a lot of fun.

Casting

I liked Havier Bardem as King Triton. He gave the character the majestic qualities it needs. Awkwafina was a great choice for Scuttles. The only role that was lacking was Jonah Hauer-King as Eric, the Prince. His character seemed to be an afterthought by the writer and director.

Age Appropriate

If you ask me, this movie isn’t age-appropriate for anyone over 12 years old. It’s a saccharine story for young children and I’m pretty sure that anyone looking for spectacular song and dance scenes will be a little disappointed.

Grade: C-

About The Peetimes: I was able to find Peetimes that avoid any of the musical scenes. I think the 3rd Peetime is the best. It’s plenty long and nothing important happens.

There are no extra scenes during, or after, the end credits of The Little Mermaid.
