Movie Review – Sound of Freedom

There are a multitude of metrics to use for grading a movie. If a friend asked you, “What grade would you give Sound of Freedom?” How would you respond?

This was not an enjoyable movie. I dare say, something is wrong with anyone who enjoys watching Sound of Freedom. But unfortunately, this is a movie that desperately needed to be made. If I were to grade this movie by how much I enjoyed it I would give it an F-.

But that would miss the point, right? It would be like downgrading an animated movie because the acting wasn’t very good. What kind of sense would that make?

I think the only way to grade this movie, or any for that matter, is by how well it achieves its goals. If a science fiction movie doesn’t have good visuals, and doesn’t make you think, then it’s not a very good science fiction movie. Conversely, a drama should be graded on how it makes you feel. And by that measure this movie earns an A. It unquestionably makes me feel and think the way the creators intended: an abyss of sympathy for the children in the world who are suffering in these conditions.

Nitpicking

If I’m going to nitpick, and I feel that it’s my duty to nitpick, I would say the creators did a poor job characterizing the pedophiles. The pedophiles were all one-dimensional monsters. I didn’t feel that they made any attempt to help the audience understand why pedophiles are the way they are. I feel strongly that our focus should be on preventing as many children as possible from being subjected to the horrors of the child sex trade. That means more than just punishing pedophiles. It also means, as a society, we need to be better and producing fewer pedophiles and helping the pedophiles that do exist to control their urges. I don’t hate pedophiles. I feel sorry for them. No person in their right mind would want to do these things to children. I want to help more people be in the right mind so that fewer children become victims.

Brave Actors

I would like to take a moment to thank all of the actors who played the pedophiles in this movie. They were truly despicable and for that they deserve recognition. Not just for their acting skills, but for the sacrifice to play such a role. It couldn’t have been easy on set to act like that. Specifically, the actor (I can’t find him on IMDB) that played the brute that went after the little boy on the island and Tim tried to step in. That scene was powerful. I’m sure the actor felt like washing his brain with bleach after performing those scenes. Let’s not take for granted the sacrifice those actors made in performing those roles. They’re better people than me because I don’t think I could do it.

Grade: A

About The Peetimes: This is a slow-paced movie. You could really run and pee almost anytime and not miss too much. But, there are a few really crucial/dramatic scenes that can’t be missed. I guess that’s why you’re using this app. 🙂 All three Peetimes are easy to summarize and plenty long. I made the first Peetime an Alert because I think it’s the most disturbing scene.

Brilliant idea with great information

I’ve been using RunPee for a few years now and it’s basically a requirement of going to the movies for me. The best part of course are the “pee times” that give you cues, synopses and times for when you can pee without missing the most important parts of the movie. There is also information about the credits- length, extras and if there are any extra scenes at the wayyy end. Super helpful to just know that it is or isn’t worth staying. There is a timer function that will buzz your phone when it’s a good time to pee. I also appreciate that the app is very conscientious about it being an app you use in a theater- dark background, all silent alarms etc. I will always enjoy the experience of the theater even if I could watch things at home- but I’ve even used it at home to check for things like after credit scenes or other information too.

  1. You are so right, Dan, to mention the actors who played the roles of pedophiles. Eeesh!

This is a powerful movie that was thoughtful in its presentation. It is a MUST SEE for anyone who cares for children – parents, family members, educators, etc. A child can be swiped up in an instant.

I walked into this reminding myself it was PG-13, and I am thankful it was. My mind and imagination are both active enough…I don’t need the actual visualization of what’s happening to these children burned into my retinas.

Sound of Freedom is an A indeed.
