Movie Review – Kung Fu Panda 4

Kung Fu Panda 4_hero

Normally I would have assigned my sister to see this movie and get the Peetimes, but my wife wanted to see it so off we went. I don’t think I’ve seen a Kung Fu Panda since the first one came out and I wasn’t really looking forward to this. At least it was a short movie. But, I was pleasantly surprised. The humor was smart and the story wasn’t boring.

Plot

Let’s keep in mind that this is a kid’s movie, so the story will have to be something of a parable, but they did some good stuff with it. There is a finite number of kid’s parables that work for storytelling. The theme of this story is accepting the necessity to change. I would be very interested in breaking down the popular kid’s movies by the theme of the parable it espouses. Based on my recollection this isn’t one of the most popular themes, but a deserving one for sure. In fact, and I know this may sound strange, I’m a huge Alabama Crimson Tide fan and during the movie I was thinking that Nick Saban should watch this movie to help him in his transition from football coach to whatever it is he’s doing now. It seems that he’s taking on more of the role of spiritual leader that Po is transitioning into.

Humor

My wife and I both laughed out loud a handful of times. That was my biggest surprise of the movie. This is one of those animated movies that is meant for children, yet consistently delivers lines that are intended for adults to keep them entertained. In fact, I didn’t see any children in the theater during our viewing. It was all teenagers and up.

Grade: B-

About The Peetimes: There are a lot of action scenes that kids won’t want to miss, and a lot of funny scenes that adults will appreciate. Fortunately, I was able to find two good Peetimes that don’t have either action or humor. I think the first Peetime is the best.

There are extra scenes during, or after, the end credits of Kung Fu Panda 4.
