What an enjoyable movie. Plenty of humor. The performances were spot on. I’ve been hugely impressed by Jodie Comer since I first saw her in Killing Eve. She was a great choice for her role. This isn’t a movie with drama and depth that really needs an actress with her skills, but she really made her character stand out.
Ryan Reynolds doesn’t get enough credit for his acting. He doesn’t put himself in really demanding roles and most of his characters are a variation on Deadpool. But he too is exactly what this movie needed.

By the way, if you want to see Ryan Reynolds in a different than Deadpool role then watch The Voices (2014).
This could have been a good kid’s movie if they hadn’t dropped so many f-bombs. But if that doesn’t bother you too much then by all means. There’s a lot of good ethical considerations presented in this movie that might resonate with adolescents more than a movie made specifically for kids.
The action was really good and what made it really enjoyable is that we get to suspend our disbelief because they are in a game, so anything goes. It reminds me a little of The Mask (1994) starring Jim Carrey. Movies like that, where the fantastical can happen without being unrealistic. There’s a conceit that once you accept that then anything goes.
The movie is a tad predictable, but it’s hard to hold that against any movie because so few are unpredictable anymore. I think the worst aspect of the movie was that the villain was a little lacking. Not that Taika Waititi wasn’t good. I think he did what was asked by the director, but the character was just a little too over the top.
All in all a really fun evening. We laughed aloud many times.
Grade: B+
About The Peetimes: This movie was hard to find Peetimes for. There’s obviously a lot of action but also a lot of plot and character development, especially early in the movie. The first Peetime isn’t great, but we wanted to offer something early just in case. The 2nd and 3rd Peetimes are better.
