Nope, this isn’t about my writing technique. This is about Universal Picture’s biggest franchise and, at the time of writing, the eighth highest grossing film series with a combined gross of over $6 billion. What’s it all about? Basically it is a whole franchise based on a live action version of those car racing games that you can play. But think more Grand Theft Auto than Super Mario Cart.
As is the way of the world when it comes to big franchises, there is a huge subsidiary income stream involving toys, theme park rides, video games, animated TV series, soundtrack albums, and spin off films. It is credited with kick starting the careers of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker; Vin Diesel went onto many things up to and including the MCU while Paul Walker, sadly and ironically, died in a car crash.
Personally speaking, it’s not my most favourite of franchises but I struggled to get past the first four films and, apparently, it all starts to take off with the fifth in the series. Maybe I should forgo my usual habit of starting at the beginning and just jump in half way through…
