My thoughts, as the RunPee Wizarding World Expert:

  • Looks like Jude Law as young Dumbledore has a substantial role, more than the extended cameo that was feared. He looks right for the part. I’m glad.
  • “A safe house in Paris.” Now we know why much of this outing will be in France, as was announced during filming last year.  LOL: “It’s good to have a  place to go, you know, for a cup of tea.”
  • The line, “For love,” is placed on a shot of Tina. This makes sense for what we know about where her role is heading in the backstory (as mentioned in J.K. Rowling’s “monster fieldguide” version of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them).
  • Nagini! WTF. I don’t like what I’m seeing. I get that they’re trying to tie the old series in with the new, but I’m not a fan of major retconning like this. Can’t an animal just be an animal sometimes? Especially in a movie about ‘beasts’.
  • Maybe, maybe Johnny Depp will pull the role off. I think I just have to get over the loss of the cute and “charming rogue” version of Grindelwald we fans were presented with in both the Harry Potter novels and the films. This re-characterization is darker than he should be, and I can’t for the life of me understand why Albus Dumbledore was ever in love with him. Unless they retcon Dumbledore as more of a jerk than we’d been led to believe. Anyway, why do I think Depp might pull this off? His voice-over seems pretty good and his momentary scenes have a certain gravitas I didn’t see from this actor before.
  • Some flying car action! Where have we seen this before? I miss the Weasleys. Nice callback, though. Appropriate car.
  • HOGWARTS! Yes, please, can I have some more?
  • WHY IS THIS TRAILER SO HARD TO SEE? When I say it’s dark, it’s not just the subject matter. The director seems to like filming in dim light conditions.
  • There’s a beast, hard to make out. Oh, no, it’s something else. Where are the pretty critters???
  • There’s the Obscurial. We knew that was coming.
  • Nicolas Flamel! Such a pleasure. Great callback to the first HP film with the Sorcerer’s/Philosopher’s Stone.
  • Hmm. Newt is a lot more grim, too. I hope there’s some humor in this film.
  • Jacob! There’s my man, and there’s the humor.
  • And a portkey, too! All the apparating got boring in FB1.
  • Some beasts at last. I hope we get more of that. And I want to go back in the suitcase where he keeps them.
  • Awww, Queenie is in pain. Hate that. Don’t you go hurting my girl.
  • Leta Lestrange gets the same line she had from the first trailer. I guess they considered that important enough to repeat.
  • Oh hey, Newt’s famous brother! He had a small mention in FB1, if you recall, something about being a war hero. I don’t know what wizarding war this refers to. I guess there’s always dark wizards to fight, in every generation. And there’s a cute bit of sibling rivalry to wrap up the preview.

So, that’s it! It’s not a second by second review, but close enough. I think there’s enough meat to chew here to keep us talking until the movie comes out, which will be on November 16th. I’m fortunate enough this time to catch a screening Nov 14th, so I’ll have Peetimes up early for everyone.

Oh Jill – thank you for the moment by moment review. I’m a huge Potter World Fan. I NEVER EVER thought Grindelwald was a “charming rogue” because he was the most evil wizard ever. And I was shocked and disappointed at Dumbledore for ever loving him. Now with that said….yes, evil can be charming and seductive. And as a young man I can see Dumbledore being swayed by a persuasive handsome wizard. But Dumbledore is inherently good and kind and could not for any length of time overlook the talent that Grindelwald used for evil. Now PLEASE, JK don’t go ruin Dumbledore for me any make him some disgruntled member of Grindelwald’s evil cult. (Not saying he had a cult, just metaphorically use of the word cult, meaning followers.)

  2. Thank you for your comments, Debra! The charming rogue stuff was established in the novels, and it was before he was evil, per se. Dumbledor DID fall for him and they traveled the world together for years. He abandoned his siblings for Grindlewald. He was apparently a real cutie and very charismatic when they were young boys and in love. They show a second of him in one of the films too, Deathly Hallows 1, as a flashback with him as a boy, sneaking out a window.

Apparently, Dumbledore made some poor choices over this boy, but then things took a bad turn as Grindelwald got “seduced by the dark side of the Force”, to so speak… 🙂

Yes thanks for reminding me. I remember the scene during Deathly Hallows and Dumbledore’s regret of how he treated his family. I was thinking about it this morning….wondering if his search for the Hallows with Grindelwald was the turning point for both of them. Grindelwald for evil and darkness and Dumbledore toward the light and goodness. I will rewatch every movie in a marathon before the next FB movie. Need to refresh my old memory.

  3. I think you are probably right about that being a turning point for him. I imagine things only gradually became clear about Grindlewald’s desire to use any means necessary to protect Wizard-kind. Kind of like how Professor X and Magneto had the same dynamic going on in X-Men. And it created cracks in the wizards’ relationship.

I will do a rewatch too, and review them all as I go, before FB2.

I don’t know if you saw this: (Fan video, but it’s pretty decent; the girl is Ariana)

Oh my. Thank you so much. I loved it. It is exactly how I believe Dumbledore would have become disillusioned with Grindalwald.
After the first few HP books came out the fans began writing their own fan fiction. I read everything that fans posted on websites including their theories and lots and lots of fan fiction storylines. Those fan sites filled in the months until the next book was released. I even stood in line at midnight to get the newest release. When the last book and last movie was released, I felt a loss as though my friends and family were gone. So grateful for the Fantastic Beasts series. I hope they make the Broadway play “Harry Potter and the cursed child” into a movie.

  4. Hey, Debra, you inspired me! I wrote this piece about the fan film just for you:

  5. I want to see Cursed Child as a movie too, but I’m not really happy with it as a screenplay, and I did wait in line for it. I think its really only to been seen on stage. Which I will try to do. !!!!

    Did you like Cursed Child?
