Nightmare Alley was probably one of the most surprising movies I’ve seen this year. Based on the trailers I had been seeing it looked decent enough — and let’s face it, anything with Bradley Cooper is worth seeing.
I want to break the review down into three sections. Let’s start with the first 40ish minutes. I was slightly bored and had a lot of questions about backstories and who’s who. They started it slow, only giving you enough information to be intrigued. I was worried at that point. Again, anything with Bradley Cooper is going to be good so I still had faith.

Jumping to the middle of the movie, the story has picked up and now you’re really wondering what he’s up to…
Now throughout the beginning and middle, you are introduced to some interesting characters. The supporting cast was top-notch and added yet another level of mystery. The sets immersed you into the life of a carnie; I could almost smell the popcorn. (Oh wait, I was in a theater — that was actual popcorn I smelled — but you get the point.)
At this point, I’m invested now and am rooting for my favorite “seer.” But wait, there’s more…here comes the spotlight, and we meet Cate Blanchett. This woman was fantastic. Things just got really interesting.
Last but not least by far, here we are at the monumental point in the movie that you start discovering things and the $#it gets real
You’re trying to think one step ahead of the movie, to hold on to the thought of everything is going to work out. What a ride. Give this movie a chance. Don’t give up on it because I can guarantee that they bring things full circle and you’ll be amazed at how they did it. Bravo, Hollywood!!
Grade: A
About The Peetimes: You have 3 solid Peetime choices. This is a long movie and I don’t suggest missing any of the last 40 minutes.
There are extra scenes during, or after, the end credits of Nightmare Alley. (What we mean by Anything Extra.)
Plot
An ambitious carny with a talent for manipulating people with a few well-chosen words hooks up with a female psychiatrist who is even more dangerous than he is.

Got this back when I was pregnant, but I’ll be keeping it forever, it’s just so handy. I don’t go to the movie theater that often (even back before quarantine when you actually could…) but I make sure the app and the movie list are all current and updated, cause it’s so handy! It’s great for running late cause you can read their summary, obviously awesome for bathroom or snack breaks mid movie, and I also love that it tells you if there’s anything after the credits which is very handy.
