The Plastics are back. The reboot of Mean Girls has got a few good callbacks to the original, but mostly this 2024 version doesn’t impress.
You need to know this remake is a musical. The songs are pretty continual, and so much of the crucial story was truncated in favor of making the movie fit the time of 2+ hours. Lots and lots of songs…and not so much with the character beats. It suffers from that.

Grool…
I’m a big fan who gave the 2004 Mean Girls an A+ during a COVID rewatch. The original does everything it set out to do. This one? Eh. I feel badly that the wonderful Tina Fey (who she looks exactly the same) did this…and not sure why. It didn’t update anything. It’s not that funny, except that there are some fun callbacks sprinkled around. Some are really quick, and some are obvious.
I don’t think this film needed to be updated: there are some references to social media, but it doesn’t seem to be important.
She doesn’t even go here!
It’s not a bad movie, but feels unnecessary when the original is A+ level and holds up just fine. The important interpersonal scenes are almost all cut in favor of songs. This is really just for Mean Girl fans, because it’s like the remade classic Overboard: forgettable.
Nice cameo at the end, however. I’d suggest seeing Mean Girls 2024 with friends for a fun double-feature party, and just enjoying what we have here because some of the songs are absolute bangers. Wear pink if it’s Wednesday, or you can wear sweats on Friday. Ponytails are okay, but only once a week!

Brilliant idea with great information
I’ve been using RunPee for a few years now and it’s basically a requirement of going to the movies for me. The best part of course are the “pee times” that give you cues, synopses and times for when you can pee without missing the most important parts of the movie. There is also information about the credits- length, extras and if there are any extra scenes at the wayyy end. Super helpful to just know that it is or isn’t worth staying. There is a timer function that will buzz your phone when it’s a good time to pee. I also appreciate that the app is very conscientious about it being an app you use in a theater- dark background, all silent alarms etc. I will always enjoy the experience of the theater even if I could watch things at home- but I’ve even used it at home to check for things like after credit scenes or other information too.

About The Peetimes: I have 3 Peetimes. All are okay, but the middle one is best. This was a surprisingly difficult movie to get Peetimes for (And I’m a Mean Girls fan), because of the songs. Do people want to see the song numbers or follow the plot? I had to make some judgment calls. It would have been nice to have the plot not be so truncated by the songs.
There are extra scenes during, or after, the end credits o f Mean Girls.
