Movie review : Inglourious Basterds

Inglourious Basterds
[ No Spoilers ]

This is classic Quentin Tarantino. It’s violent but not horrifically so. If you’re just a little squeamish then there are probably only two scenes that you’ll want to glance away from. ( One being when Sgt. Donny Donowitz brings out the baseball bat. I can’t tell you the other without spoiling the movie. ) Most of the violence is just your standard blood splatters from getting shot with a machine gun. If you could sit and watch Saving Private Ryan you can certainly watch this.

The movie is about 2 1/2 hours long and kind of feels that way. There were a few times in the movie that I thought, “Can we get back to the Basterds now?” Some of the scenes seem to run a bit longer than really necessary. But that’s just Tarantio’s style. He’s in no hurry to tell the story. So the long scenes are either going to annoy you or make you appreciate the story teller’s method of giving details that aren’t essential to the plot.

Brad was wonderful as Lt. Aldo Raine. His opening speech to the basterds was reminiscent of George C. Scott’s speech in Patton. In this case I wish he would have taken a little more time in his delivery. Otherwise it was fantastic.

The rest of the cast gives perfectly good performances. Christoph Waltz stands out as Col. Hans Landa and probably has more screen time than anyone. Much of the credit goes to Tarantino for doing a great job of directing. Great actors can really suck with poor direction but give them the right support and you’ll get their best. Fortunately the cast is very tallented and Tarantino brings that out.

There were a good 4-5 scenes that the audience laughed at. Nothing hilarious but some good chuckles. If you laughed during Pulp Fiction, and I was practically rolling in the floor a few times, then you’ll get a good snort here and there.

For my part the most annoying aspect was the subtitles for the German and French lines. Normally I don’t mind but it makes it very difficult to take notes since I can’t tell what is being said unless I look at the screen and I can’t look at the screen and take notes at the same time.

This app is the best wingman for a movie goer, especially when you have to go. It even has a vibrating timer that is spot on for those ‘go times’ some of us need! There are many other features that are wonderful. It even lets you know when the kill scenes are coming up for the people and animals for those who may have sensitivities to that type of content. The staff go above and beyond!

  1. This movie is one of the very best that I’ve seen in the last couple of years! It’s a wonderful mix of action, suspense and humor all rolled into one cohesive storyline. Brad Pitt does an excellent job in this film, as do the supporting characters. Quentin Tarentino knocks another one out of the park. You’ll find the movie very enjoyable and will also find yourself talking about it alot afterward. Guys, if you make this a “date” movie, be prepared to want to come back and watch it again with the guys, or by yourself. You’ll enjoy it on a date, don’t get me wrong, but it’s better for both men and women to see it with “gender” peers. I can’t tell you why without blowing the story and plot. There are also alot of surprises throughout the movie to keep it more than fresh. The twists and turns are many and well written. And YES, RunPee does have the best times for a well-needed bathroom break! But if you can avoid going all the better, as each and every minute of the movie has something unique, exciting and/or interesting to offer. Enjoy yourself at one fine movie!

    1. @Tom, Thanks for the compliment about the PeeTimes. They were originally added by a user in the UK but he had trouble logging in so he emailed them to me to add. I then saw the movie the next day and added a few minor details.

I don’t think I liked the movie as much as you but I certainly agree that there wasn’t anything wrong with it. The story, plot, pacing, etc were all nearly flawless.

  2. Great pee times! 🙂

Just saw this today and I agree with your review, Dan. Mine is at http://www.earthmombooks.com/MovieReviews.aspx (plug plug – aw go read it!) 🙂

The subtitles were just freakin ANNOYING and they go on and on throughout. Many scenes are long for no reason. And I really wanted to get back to the Basterds – since the movie is named for them after all. Not enough of them, their story, Brad Pitt (who is great in this! What an outstanding character. I’m not usually a fan) and even his wonderful Basterd HUGO Stiglitz – wasn’t that a huge build up and let down. It seemed…. splintered. Several stories, and left us hanging and didn’t go into the ones I wanted to hear I guess.

I wanted to LOVE this entire movie but so many things made it impossible for me to do so. Normally I love Tarantino – truly. We gave this a 4 out of 5 for orginality and quality, but it’s not one of Tarantinos movies that I’ll watch over again.

  3. LOVED this movie! There were an awful lot of subtitles, true, but I prefer reading subtitles to movies set in a foreign country yet all the characters speak perfect, unaccented English all the time. Makes it feel more authentic. I also wish the Basterds had more screen time. Adored Brad Pitt in this role.
I agree about the pee times, right on the mark. I checked them before the movie started but managed to hold on through the movie. I didn’t want to miss a thing!
