Godzilla Minus One is a perfect blend of mature storytelling with the 50s/60s movie style.
Something many disaster/action movies get wrong is trying to incorporate too many characters and their experiences into the action. This movie puts the focus on a small group of people, and specifically one man.

The story is beautifully constructed. The characters have clear motivations and conflicts that drive their behavior. There’s never a moment that we could think a character acts inconsistently. It makes an impossible story feel plausible.
At first I wasn’t crazy about the style used for Godzilla, but it really captures the original. They made up for it with the nuclear breath.
Acting
The acting was spot on. I would say that maybe it’s a little over the top at times, but this is a different culture and a different time. When considering that it feels entirely real.

Movie Watching Must Have!!
I go feral for this app. I love it so much and I wish everyone knew about it and used it. It is incredibly useful and I would be devastated if this app ever disappeared. Things I love: 1) the pee times! It’s so handy to know the best time to go and then read the synopsis of what’s happening while I’m gone. I never have to worry about missing the good bits! 2) knowing if there is a post-credits scene or not. This might be my fav feature because I would have missed out on some pretty critical scenes if it weren’t for RunPee. 3) the movie review and viewer rankings. This info has made me watch some movies that I normally wouldn’t and it’s nice seeing things outside of my usual scope. 4) that it’s a small family run business. I love shopping small and it really does feel like I’m part of the RunPee family! If you reach out to them, Dan will personally respond to you and he is so warm and helpful. GET THIS APP AND THEN SUBSCRIBE! It is absolutely worth it and you’ll be using it again and again!

Cultural significance
What impressed me the most was the thought-provoking themes of war and Japanese culture that were woven thoughout the story. They did a great job of keeping it present without making it feel that it was constantly being thrown in our face.
Grade: A+
About The Peetimes: First, let me say that as a rule, we do not add Peetimes for movies with subtitles. It is crazy hard to take notes and try and read subtitles at the same time. But this movie is worth the exception. I tried to pick Peetimes that I could get what was going on without reading all of the subs. I’m going back to rewatch this with my wife this weekend and make any needed corrections. I think all of the Peetimes are pretty good. The last two are the ones that I would recommend. The 2nd Peetime isn’t bad, but there’s a big action scene that follows so if 3 1/2 minutes isn’t enough for you to make a dash then don’t chance it.
There are extra scenes during, or after, the end credits of Godzilla Minus One.
